Ask the children to use this worksheet to to record what they SEE, HEAR, SMELL and FEEL as they walk outside on a nice Autumn day.

Recommended sequence

1. Review the 5 senses.

2. Take a moment to tune in, breathe, and just be.

3. Give instructions for how to quietly be in the outside world, using keen observation and a relaxed mind to fill in this chart.

4. Give plenty of time for students to draw or write their findings.

5. Come together as a group and find out what people observed and any impact it had on them.

Tips for your mindfulness nature walk

1. Walk at a natural, slow pace. Take your time to take in the beauty of nature around you. Look around you. Notice the trees around you. Are they starting to change colors? Are they losing their leaves?
2. Take in deep breaths through your nose. Shift your awareness to your smell. What do you smell? Does it smell earthy? Do you smell the leaves around you?
3. Listen. What do you hear? Are there animals bustling around? Do you hear the leaves crunching underneath your feet?
4. Pick up a few leaves. How do they feel? Are they starting to decompose? Are they crunchy? What color are they?
5. Shift your attention back to walking. Feel the physical sensation of walking. One foot up, one foot down. Notice your feet touching the ground. How do you feel?
6. At the end of your walk, pause and take a moment. Stand still and take in a deep breath. Take a look around and notice your feelings.

It's Almost Halloween! Time for children to do some Creative Writing. The Franken Monsters are fun templates that display the art of Creative Writing. The smell of fall is in the air and that can only mean one thing -- COLLEGE FOOTBALL! Identify rhythms in proper nouns with this fun activity. Students will see a college football team and their corresponding mascot and given a set of blank beats that go with their team. Have the students identify the syllables in the team name and match it to rhythm! Most are eighth and quarter note rhythms, but some have eighth note triplets in there. For a competitive activity, I have kids all have a bag of cards and lay them on the floor and have tap lights for when they are ready to answer. I typically give 7 points for a touchdown if the kids get it correct before anyone else -- or you can award the first three kids who get it right, or however you wish. You can also play it as an assessment and have kids work individual or in teams There's a powerpoint and PDF included in this package. You have 20 teams to go through and can last up to 30-45 minutes depending on what pace you go in the activity. Have a great time and GO.... anyone know which my team is? ;)

Working on the lines of the treble clef staff? Here's a fun way to have your students use their knowledge and solve a puzzle with Mystery Word! The Mystery Word package includes 50 challenging words and/or phrases that are spelled using the musical letters (A,B,C,D,E,F, and G) of the treble clef staff. Blank letter boxes are below the note on the staff for the students to fill in. Some words and phrases are easy, but some get pretty difficult! Included are three files: The teacher version, a PDF file with 50 pages in PDF format to use as a class activity. The student version, a PDF file you can print out with 25 pages, 2 puzzles to each page you can individual give to students. (If printed out and copied back-to-back, it only runs 13 pages per booklet) The answer key (just in case a substitute teacher needs it) ;) You can use this as a warmup to your lesson, or a lesson in itself -- it makes a great substitute teacher plan as well! This unit study is at the level of your middle schoolers - in Core French (FSL) - both for content and maturity. I was finding materials that matched their comprehension were babyish and they'd be disengaged and frustrated! My material is engaging, animated, not babyish but at their (beginner!) level.
