Whether you have experience teaching music or not, this unit is for you. Have a small budget or no budget for teaching music? I have included ways to make music with your students for very little money. I have used this unit for 5 years teaching music and every year the students love it. This unit will give you a semester (or half a year) worth of material to use with approximately 2 periods of music per week.

What is bucket drumming?

Bucket drumming is a relatively inexpensive way to bring rhythmic practices into the classroom. This unit is designed to be accessible for all teachers to use, regardless of musical training. The use of familiar words helps both teachers and students learn simple rhythms together. The rhythms increase in difficulty and there are options for easy, medium, and hard rhythms. This allows for easy modifications and accommodations ensuring that students of all abilities are successful in this unit. I have taught variations of this unit with grade 6-8 students for over 5 years with success, and these lessons can be modified for other grade levels.

In my experience, students love bucket drumming and enjoy the lessons in this unit. One activity that you can use when you have a few extra minutes is the Elimination Game, and students LOVE it! It can be used as a great warm-up game and to reinforce the skills taught in this unit.

This unit includes games, lessons, and activities to help strengthen ear training, encourage active listening, develop rhythmic abilities, develop composition skills, explore creativity, and most importantly, to have fun! I have also included some helpful information to get bucket drumming started in your classroom. Included in this unit are lessons, games. activities, and rubrics where needed. There are a solid 21 – 31 periods worth of work included in this unit (possibly more).

Included below are the overall lesson plans and activities included in this unit. Most “lessons” can be used for multiple periods and the approximate number of periods is included in brackets beside the activity. I have based these periods on approximately 45 minutes each. These lessons include opportunities to read music, compose, and perform.

Then, there are nine writing units which include:

• Four biography writing units about Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Alan Turing and Franklin Roosevelt. These units cover four lessons each and require students to cut out, read and sort facts before writing these up into paragraphs.
• Four informational writing units about an World War I, The Treaty of Versailles, World War II and the Holocaust, . The units have been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately an hour each.
• And one opinion writing unit discussing who was the most influential allied leader between Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt.

• Session 2: All About Anxiety Participants delve into the fundamentals of anxiety, gaining insights into what anxiety is, how it manifests, and its individualized impact.
• Session 3: Anxiety Triggers This session deepens students' understanding of anxiety triggers. Through artistic expression and self-reflection, participants visually identify and express their unique triggers.
• Session 4: My Panic Button The session explores the body's response to anxiety, including the anxiety and stress continuum. Participants differentiate between panic attacks and general anxiety while being introduced to anxiety-affirming techniques.
• Session 5: Worries Brain Dump Students explore the concept of a worries brain dump, create their own brain dump craft, and engage in a visualization exercise to empower themselves to regain control over worries.
• Session 6: Cognitive Triangle (Thoughts-Feelings-Actions) This session delves into the cognitive triangle, illustrating the interplay between thoughts, feelings, and actions in anxiety. Participants gain insights into thought patterns contributing to anxiety.
• Session 7: The Power of Thoughts Students explore negative and unhelpful thought patterns, learning to challenge and reframe them. Hands-on activities reinforce mindful reframing techniques, empowering them to harness the power of thoughts.
• Session 8: What's In and Out of My Control (Locus of Control) Participants gain clarity on the concept of locus of control, distinguishing what is within their control and what lies beyond it in anxiety-provoking situations, fostering a sense of empowerment.
• Session 9: Choosing to Let Go This session encourages students to become pilots of their worries, distinguishing between helpful and unhelpful worries. The concept of emergency oxygen masks is introduced, emphasizing self-care strategies and the significance of letting go.
• Session 10: Coping Strategies Participants explore helpful and unhelpful coping skills for managing stress and challenges. They create personal reference folders for coping strategies and engage in a coping skills relay, enhancing practical skills for stress management.
• Session 11: Mindful Moments Students learn to cultivate mindfulness in the moment and various environments. Mindful breathing techniques and observation exercises are introduced, promoting presence and awareness in daily life.

This creative Picasso Self Portraits Unit was designed to be printed and displayed as examples while you teach. Use this PDF file to display these beautiful images one-by-one on a large screen. For this assignment, I asked students to sketch themselves in a Picasso-inspired style-abstract. Students exaggerated their facial features and placed them in different areas on their face. Students were asked to outline their artwork with a black sharpie marker. Students used watercolor paint to add vibrant, bold colors to their beautiful artwork. Contrast was a focus. This unit was designed (and taught) for a grade 5-7 mixed ability group.

If you want to get your students to think about the world around them and understand that everyone in the world has the same rights, but not everyone actually gets those rights, this is the unit to do this. Using explanatory writing as the genre of writing, students learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while learning how to write different explanatory writing formats.

This unit includes links to required media, a teach guide (with 21-day timeline) and a student book to get you started. The final assessment questions are also provided. Rubric/success criteria are to be developed with the class (I do not provide rubrics because of the differences in curriculum).
