Real-Life Math Activity/resource! Practice of Fractions - A Good Exercise!

By Daniel

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

This fun real-life fractions exercise deals with a situation adults (especially those of us with OCD) have all faced - how to hang pictures on a wall with equal spaces between each picture. Students will face this real-life situation where they will use addition of fractions, subtraction of fractions, multiplication of fractions and division of fractions to hang these pictures equal distances apart. The exercise gives practice with proper fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, converting between mixed and improper fractions, obtaining the LCD, simplifying fractions etc.

  • Fractions are important for all students
  • Fractions are tough for many students
  • Fractions are often not very exciting to most students
  • Fractions are too often removed from "the real world".

To help students using their TI-calculators for fractions, please consider these helpful tutorials and tasks - https://www.TeachShare.com/Product/10-Step-by-Step-Tutorials-and-Worksheets-for-all-Middle-School-TI-Calculators-7040282

  • reviews relevant Algebra skills with ratios and proportions.
  • applies the new found knowledge of ratio and proportion in real-life situations by determining the height of real-life objects.

This task can also be done as an outside activity where students collect the data of Task 6 and 7 for themselves, and then calculating the height of any object at school or in their own back yard. The project has been tried and tested many times and works really well.

Real-Life Math Fun Activity/Resource! - Discoveries on The Theorem of Pythagoras

By Daniel

This fun discovery and extension in the form of 10 tasks is a comprehensive unit on the Theorem of Pythagoras. It takes students through ten exciting tasks where they discover the necessity of the theorem of Pythagoras and then use it with a variety of real-life problems.

Students ...

  • work through the nuts and bolts of the theorem and how to calculate the hypotenuse (or any diagonal across a rectangle).
  • experience the different practical, real-life applications of the theorem of Pythagoras.
  • study Pythagorean triples and primitive Pythagorean triples.
  • learn how to create their own Pythagorean triples and primitive Pythagorean triples.

The focus of many of the tasks is on problem solving and students will feel the satisfaction to solve real-life problems in a very unique way. Along the way students also discover some interesting Number Theory, through Pythagorean Triples and Primitive Pythagorean Triples and in the process they dust off substitution, factors, products, the multiplication tables and more.

Theorem of Pythagoras, Problem Solving, Substitution, Number Theory, Factors, Prime numbers, coprime, relatively prime, Primitive Pythagorean Triples, Multiples.

Real-Life Math fun! Exciting Data and Stats Activity - Why so many white cars?

By Daniel

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students.

This DIY hands-on project takes students through the process of collecting, sharing, representing and analyzing qualitative data. Students collect data on the brand, color and type of cars and then present their data in bar and circle graphs.

  • Why are there so many white cars on the road?
  • Why are some roads full of potholes?
  • Which brand of car is the most popular in my town?

I have done this project multiple times, have "ironed out any administrative wrinkles" in the practical application of the project and it works every time. Students have a lot fun with the project. They take ownership of the project, since they collect the data themselves.

Qualitative Data, Bar Graphs, Line Graph, Circle Graph, Pie Chart, Statistics, Data, Histogram, Line Graph, Box-and-Whiskers Plot, Stem-and-Leaf Plot.
