Teaching Tips:

I typically allow:

• One class period to read/annotate the passage (passages not included/resource will work for any passage)
• One class period to analyze the question stems
• One class period to answer questions and provide analysis/rationales of answer choices
• This process can be adjusted as needed for in-class assignments or homework. Pacing can also be adjusted as needed, especially as students become more familiar with the process.

Engaging Fiction Comprehension - Character, Plot, Solution

This resource includes a 500+ word engaging fiction story centered around a compelling character facing a problem and coming up with a thoughtful solution. The complex narrative is written at a high 5th - 6th grade reading level and tackles mature themes including passion, injury, depression, and overcoming adversity that will resonate with middle school students.

The passage is followed by 5 multiple choice questions and 2 short answer questions focused on analyzing the central character's motivations and development, understanding the plot points and central conflict, and examining how the character grapples with and solves the key problem in the story. The 2007 movie, Nancy Drew makes a connection with both the older and modern Nancy Drew novels. Students can see Nancy Drew in action when watching the movie, after reading the book series. The movie is similar to the book series in that it discusses problem solving skills, following rules, working together, and being a good friend. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the movie as well as students own experiences. Students can also write sentences uses unknown vocabulary words in sentences. Students can answer these comprehension questions as they watch the movie or after they have finished the movie.

Arthur's Family Vacation is a great book to read before students leave for a break from school or summer vacation as well as when they return. Students are presented with a variety of comprehension questions based on what happens in the book, Arthur's Family Vacation. Students can answer these questions as the book is read to them, as they read the book independently or they can use the text for lookbacks once the book is finished.

As students are learning the 40 pre-primer sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence (along with some visuals to help them understand unfamiliar vocabulary words), and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using the newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the pre-primer sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.

Flat Stanley: Stanley's Christmas Adventure written by Jeff Brown is a cute holiday book that all of my students enjoyed. Students can complete this packet of reading comprehension questions, finding definitions of challenging words, making up sentences using those challenging words, and paragraph writing independently or with support.

The graphic novel, Queen Bee written by Chynna Clugston is entertaining and suspenseful. This book encourages my on-level as well as struggling readers to want to read. Students will like this book at the upper elementary, middle school and high school level, because the main characters not only have the ability to show the reader their super powers, but students can also relate to the main characters as they navigate school and developing friendships as well. Upon reading each chapter, students can answer the comprehension questions with help or independently. When students are finished reading this book, they can answer the questions about their favorite character, the plot, setting, etc. as well.
