Getting students excited about poetry and figurative language can be difficult. I find that putting it into terms of music often with popular songs makes the process more enjoyable for them and myself. This product contains a powerpoint with links to videos, worksheets which examine both figurative language and poetry, and most of is an interactive lesson that will have your students singing while they're learning.

Beyond the primary grades teachers often seem to forget about checking students reading fluency. This is a simple to use form for students to provide themselves a self-feedback on their read aloud fluency. Teachers can then use the same form to provide their own feedback on the students reading fluency. Directions

• The vocabulary self-awareness chart allows students to assess themselves on class vocabulary words.

This file contains directions on how to write a found poem, and requires students to write one for a book they are reading independently. The students will choose a passage in their novel that they'd like to summarize using a found poem, then they identify words and phrases from the text that they'll incorporate.It includes the directions, a writer's checklist, a reflection for the students to complete after their poem, and a question at the end that requires them to switch poems with a partner where they have to summarize the section of text their partner wrote about. If they can, their partner's poem was successful in summarizing the text! If not, their partner should go back and revise.

Are you looking for an interactive, student-led activity/ assessment for the end of Avi's Crispin? How about a Socratic Seminar!

This file contains 2 different packets of Socratic Circle questions- packet A and packet B. Each packet contains 3 different questions that require students to answer and provide two quotes from the text to back up their answers. Students are also required to come up with 3 additional questions they will ask if there's time in their circle. Finally, the packet has a page where each student will monitor a partner in the opposite circle. I've also included a rubric for your use!

When you print out the file, you'll see packet A on the top half of the sheet, packet B on the bottom half, and then the rubric as the last page of the file. You'll need to cut each packet page in half after you print them out, as each booklet you give to the students is only half a page. They are labeled A and B. Give half your class A, half B, and allow them to plan! The day of the circle, you'll let A discuss for maybe 20-30 minutes, then flip-flop your circles and have B discuss.

My students really enjoy Socratic Seminars! I have found it works better when you give each group three different questions, so you don't see the same discussion 2 times, which is how this packet is set up.

I used the Socratic Circle as their "final test grade" for Crispin. The students need to have completed the whole book to answer the questions included in the packet.

Included are 17 quotes from "A Retrieved Reformation" by O. Henry that you will cut into strips. 11 of the quotes ARE foreshadowing, 6 are NOT. You'll make a set for each group of students. The directions (included- you can project them or make copies) instruct the students to make a pile of the strips that foreshadow Jimmy will crack a safe again, and a pile of the ones that do not. For the ones that DO, they are instructed to discuss WHY/ HOW they are foreshadowing. The document also includes 2 different paragraph response reflection questions. You could choose the one you'd like to use, OR allow your students to choose the one they'd like to answer.

I have included which quotes contain foreshadowing and which do not for your reference. Thank you!
