This lesson allows students to use Microsoft Word, Google Docs or Canva to create a printable Valentine’s Day card. A complete, step-by-step instruction guide is included for Microsoft Word, a Quick Start Guide is included for Canva, and links are also provided to online tutorials for Google Docs and Canva. Also included are the project expectations and a grading rubric. This is a fun, creative project that reinforces technology skills while inspiring creativity in students. Different software options allow teachers to utilize available resources, give students a choice of which software they would like to use, and encourage new learning skills. The lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could easily be used in upper elementary or high school as well. All files are editable.

Sometimes, we as teachers are the only ones in their lives to "make it a great day" and are the only ones that can make these special occasions special to them. Your students will love these geography-themed Valentine's Day cards and laugh at the play on words using country names. Your students will have a blast figuring out what each Valentine's card means and sharing them with their classmates.

How to Print:

• Print off Valentine's cards on cardstock and cut out
• If printed and cut correctly, fit A2 4.3/8 x 5.3/4 envelopes (if you choose to use envelopes)
• If you wish to or your school district allows, glue or tape a wrapped candy to the card.

This fun geography skill activity is great for your students on Valentine's Day! We all know how students get excited on Valentine's Day! Through this activity, not only will they have fun working together or individually to solve the puzzle, but they will also have the opportunity to practice reading absolute location —latitude and longitude — coordinate grid system. Each moment is a teaching moment, and this will allow reinforcement of their map reading skills. They will use the absolute locations that are provided on the key and identify the points on the coordinate grid, drawing one line from one point to another. Topic: St. Valentine’s Day History & Geography (Cooperative Activity Lesson)

Theme: Valentine’s Day

Subject: World Geography

Grade Level: 5th-12th grade

Time frame: Two 60-Min Class Periods

DAY ONE: COOPERATIVE READING ASSIGNMENT & COMPREHENSION GAME

MATERIALS

• A Geographical Study of Valentine’s Day (Student Copy)
• Store-bought or hand-made Valentine’s cards with envelopes, 6-8 per group, depending on the group size. Each student will have two cards. Three students = 6 cards. Four students = 8 cards. (Students may earn extra credit points for donating cards)
• Reproducible valentines and envelopes if students are not able to provide store-bought Valentine’s cards (Valentine included; purchase some small envelopes at the dollar store.)
• Directions to the Valentine Swap reading comprehension game. There are three options: (1) Valentine Swap, (2) Valentine Pile It Up Game, (3) Valentine's Fact or Fiction Game

Note: For option #3, Fact and Fiction Game, each group will need a whiteboard and a dry-erase marker.

PROCEDURE

Reading Activity & Comprehension Game:

Students will work together to complete a geography Valentine's reading activity on the history of Valentine's Day. They will then participate in one of the three-game options provided in the lesson with detailed instructions.

To incorporate language arts into the geography classroom, the teacher has the option to have the students complete a cumulative group or individual activity of creating a poem. This lesson includes graphics to help students understand the difference between limerick, haiku, and rhymes.

CLOSURE:

Groups/Students will present their poems to the class and will be evaluated based on a rubric.

But, if you choose not to use the set of questions provided, any set of trivia questions will work. If you need to use this game as a review activity for term tests, change the questions to questions related to your testing topic.
