Engaging activities for literature:

"A Christmas Carol" Vocabulary: Students will find the given words within the novel "A Christmas Carol" and record the sentence in which the word can be found. I had the students complete these sheets after reading the section of the book.

Creative activity: Students participate in an activity where they will write and illustrate their stories of Christmas past, present, and yet to come, in a way that is similar to what happens to Scrooge in the novel.

Students loved sharing their stories and hearing the hopes their classmates have for their futures.

As a culminating activity: Students read or watch A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, my students read A Christmas Carol and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas, for an engaging activities before the holiday. They will practice comparing and contrasting in three different ways, including an exciting snowball fight.

Task #1 Plot

In yoga, the Yamas & Niyamas are a moral code of conduct, a guideline for how to live. Together, the Yamas & Niyamas help us to make careful decisions about how to think, speak, and behave. This foundational thinking prepares children to form healthy relationships with themselves and others.

How to play:

• print out and cut up the cards
• put them in a receptacle of your choice
• decide on how long you want to spend on this activity and set a timer
• pupils take turns pulling out a card and reading the sentence
• if they say it right, they get to keep the card
• if they get it wrong, they put it back
• the next pupil takes a turn
• if they pull out a Kaboom! card, they put all their cards back

Interactive individual or group activity that uses symbols and inferencing to answer the Top Ten Kids' Movies. Colorful images with answer sheet. Movies included: Bambi Cars Ice Age Monsters, Inc. Pinocchio Princess Bride Shrek Tinkerbell Toy Story Wall-E

These are fake Instagram posts that have pictures of activities. One post shows the activity happening in the present and the other post shows the activity either finished or happening in the past. The teacher will need to cut out the Instagram posts and the text boxes. Then the students will need to place the descriptions (inside the text boxes) with the correct Instagram post. The majority of the practice with this activity is focused on past tense, but there is also present and future tense.

**An extension for the activity is to have the students underline and identify the verb that shows the tense of the sentence.**

This can be used for multiple grade levels and would be a great support activity for upper elementary and middle school students who need practice with verb tenses (especially past tense).

Playing TABOO in English is a great way to get ESL students to speak English and learn a lot of new vocabulary. This game focuses on HOUSE AND HOME vocabulary. It is simple to modify and use with beginners and advanced students alike. Advanced students try to get teammates to guess the word at the top of the card without saying any of the "taboo" words listed below. Beginner students can still play, but they should be allowed to use the "taboo" words to help learn new vocabulary and build sentences in English.

Object of the game:

One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the word at the top of the card. Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game.

How does it work?

In this escape room, students will try to escape from the hungry lions of the African veldt by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering codes, and finding clues along the way.

• Santa or Scrooge: In the first task, students draw lines to match literary and poetic devices within the story to their definitions. (Devices covered: metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, personification, allusion, repetition, alliteration, foreshadowing, imagery)
• Criss-Cross: In the second task, students must solve a crossword puzzle with questions about characters, literary elements, quotes, and plot events of the story.
• Vocab Match Up: In the third task, students fill in the blanks with vocabulary words from the story.
• The Plot Thickens: In the fourth task, students must order the plot events of The Veldt on Freytag's Pyramid.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must complete a jig saw puzzle that reveals a quote that connects to a major theme in the tale. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, the students may escape from the veldt!
