Indigenous People's Regional Dwellings Project--5th grade Studies Weekly Week 6

Project with variety:
Teachers will have three different approaches to choose from to complete this project concerning the regional dwellings of Indigenous People of North America. Students will research an assigned region in order to complete a project concerning family dwellings. Directions are provided for models, posters, or Google Slides.
Students will answer questions concerning their research and reach conclusions based on their information. These questions increases rigor.
Students will have an opportunity to present the information gained with their classmates.
Students will use their creativity to create the project.
This project aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standards 5.H.3 and 5.G.7.

Explorer Trading Cards Project--5th Grade Studies Weekly Week 10

Engaging project:
Students practice their research skills while using creativity to create an explorer trading card. Students learn about what explorer goals were and how they were able to make their journeys. Students learn who sponsored the explorers and what their intent was.
Students need to use their previous knowledge and what they research in order to reach conclusions about how the explorer affected the indigenous peoples of the countries they entered.

Protesting the Acts of Parliament (Poster): 5th Grade Studies Weekly Week 19

Students show creativity:
By researching and protesting the Acts of Parliament, students will use their creativity to explore and present those Acts which the colonists found unfair.
This activity focuses on early colonist resistance to British Rule in an engaging way. Students make a protest sign which explains the Act of Parliament and outlines this Act's unfairness to the colonists. Students can display for observation or give an oral presentation concerning their protest.
Following the study of the class's protest signs, students will complete a reflection sheet which guides students into higher level thinking concerning how these Acts of Parliament sowed the seeds of revolution.

Students will research Alexander the Great and then decide if he was great good or great bad. They will use a graphic organizer to organize their data and then present their position.

Students will be practice making informed opinions based on research.

Create an Ancient Greek City-State: 6th Studies Weekly Week 10

Review Ancient Greek City-States Creatively:
Students will read informational text to review what they have learned concerning Ancient Greek city-states. This text is also a good overview of city-states for those students who haven't learned about Ancient Greek city-states. This informational text sheet also includes instructions about the project.
Students will use their creativity to make a map of their own city-state and fill out an information sheet detailing the specifics of their city-state. Students will determine government, class system, education, economy, and other important facets of their city-states. Can be completed individually, with a partner, or in a group.
Follow up questions are provided for early finishers, written assignment, or to start classroom discussion. These questions increase rigor and allows for students to make connections.
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of Ancient Greek city-states by creating their own.

Students will learn about and create their own Feudal Manor Map. They will determine where the different groups will be located throughout their own invented manor and follow up with questions to increase rigor.
Students will use their knowledge and creativity to make this map. Each student's map will be unique and an excellent display.
Rigor is added through follow up questions. Students can follow up with deeper level thinking by answering extension questions.

In this lesson, students learn more about famous structures and landmarks in Boston and the individuals who created them. Students choose the landmarks they will research and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a newspaper using Web 2.0 tools (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.
This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, or for a technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

Design a Monument to Revolutionary Minorities: 5th Grade Studies Weekly Week 24

Design a fitting monument to the minorities of the Revolution:
Students will research a black, native, or woman who helped the patriots during the Revolutionary War. Students will use the information they gather to design a fitting monument to honor their patriot.
Students will use their creativity to design either a 2D or 3D monument. They will make interesting monuments which will create an interesting display. Templates of the monuments are provided.
Once the students have completed their research, they will complete a worksheet concerning their patriot. This worksheet will lead to deeper level thinking concerning how the outcome of the American Revolution would be very different without the minorities who worked to help the patriots.
This product aligns with Indiana Social Studies Standard 5.H.13.

Classical Music in Modern Day Life - Puzzle & Presentation Project

In this lesson, students learn fun facts about the use of classical music in modern day life such as movies, television, and video games as they research different uses of classical music in modern day life. No download is required to use Canva (www.canva.com) - a free product, making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning. Options for using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides are also included for use if the teacher prefers.
In these lessons, students are provided with a quick tutorial for Canva, as well as links to other resources to help them with their designs. The tutorial is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. Links are included to tutorials for Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides. Students create a presentation with examples of classical music used in their own lives after researching the topic. They use that information along with graphics, pictures and backgrounds from the Internet and also supplied in Canva, to create a finished presentation that explains their topic, and add their own opinions and insights to the project. A word search puzzle is also included (with answer key) for early finishers or as a part of the lesson.
This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary or high school classes as well. Great to leave for a sub or to use for distance learning too.

· Computers with Internet access for each student (or pair of students)
· Software such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides

Create your own Egyptian Burial Chamber: 6th Studies Weekly Week 7

Hands on project exploring your own Egyptian Burial Chamber:
Students will love sharing their story for the generations to come when creating their own version of an Egyptian Burial Chamber. Beginning with an informational text concerning these burial chambers, students will be engaged while creating their own.
There are four versions of this project which teachers can choose from for their students: written, drawing, model, and Google Slides. Instructions are provided for each of these projects. The projects have labels for students to complete which can be attached to the project for display.
Follow up questions will allow for increased rigor and encourages students to make connections to modern day.

Great Inventions - The Automobile - WebQuest & Word Search | Distance Learning

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the invention of the automobile as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle and an answer key, which is perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson.
