Are you looking for an authentic, student-led final assessment for The Giver?

This file contains 2 different packets of Socratic Circle questions- packet A and packet B. Each packet contains 3 different questions that require students to answer and provide two quotes from the text to back up their answers. Students are also required to come up with 3 additional questions they will ask if there's time in their circle. Finally, the packet has a page where each student will monitor a partner in the opposite circle. They will make a check each time their partner speaks, and paraphrase a meaningful comment their partner made. Lastly, the file contains the socratic circle rubric.

When you print out the file, you'll see packet A on the top half of the sheet, packet B on the bottom half, and then the rubric as the last page of the file. You'll need to cut each packet page in half after you print them out, as each booklet you give to the students is only half a page. They are labeled A and B. Give half your class A, half B, and allow them to plan! The day of the circle, you'll let A discuss for maybe 20-30 minutes, then flip-flop your circles and have B discuss.

My students really enjoy Socratic Seminars! I have found it works better when you give each group three different questions, so you don't see the same discussion 2 times, which is how this packet is set up.

I used the Socratic Circle as their "final test grade" for The Giver. The students need to have completed the whole book to answer the questions included in the packet.

This is an independent reading preparedness and preparation rubric I use to make sure students come to class prepared to read, and stay focused and respectful to their peers while reading in class. It is a 4 point rubric, and focuses on preparedness and performance. Students use it to self-assess their own reading habits, and set a goal to work towards at the bottom. Then I go in and score them with a different color pen on the rubric, so they can see where they believe they are, and where I believe they are on the rubric.

The assignment sheet for student distribution includes the definition, purpose, and rules of a found poem, and an example from ch 17 of The Maze Runner that I wrote. This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries around the African Rift Valley. It sits along a divergent boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart. In millions of years, this could cause not only East Africa to become a new small continent, but would create a new ocean.

This lesson incorporates music as a learning tool. Students will enjoy the new rendition of the song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It is a love song from West Africa to the East African Rift Valley. An MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic forces.
3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.

I use multiple specific examples to show what it means to

After teaching 6th grade math in a few years, I've learned that students often don't know what it means to "explain the accuracy" of their answer or to determine if it makes sense in the context of the problem. This is designed to help clarify the expectations that they will see throughout MYP.

I do this after our first Criterion D quiz. All examples are from the quiz.

This is a google slideshow that I use to help students (and their parents) understand my expectations on an MYP Criterion B Assessment.

• Verify that the rule works for multiple examples

After teaching 6th grade math in a few years, I've learned that students often don't know what it means to "write a rule" or how to verify if their rule is correct with well chosen examples. This is designed to help clarify the expectations that they will see throughout MYP.

I do this after our first Criterion B quiz. All examples are from the quiz.

It takes between 4-6 periods to complete and is appropriate for grade 5-8. Please note: This assignment works best if you are able to access Apple Music. As a teacher, you could always set up a free account to show to your students or ask your students if any of them already have it and would be willing to show the class how it works. Spend some time and show them how to use it if you have access to it. You can also see some demos from the Apple website. If you do not subscribe to Apple Music, I highly recommend it. You can still use this assignment without Apple Music with your students and they can reflect on the inclusivity of the playlist that they create. TIPS: 1. I created this rubric to help my middle students know what is expected of them when completing a journal writing prompt for a personal narrative. Often times, my students take advantage of free writing and do not think of it as a "real grade." Giving them something to base their writing off of gives them more direction and motivation to turn in their best work, while also sticking to their personal story/experiences.

*This was intended for, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, the global pandemic COVID-19 experience. My students are given a weekly prompt via Google Classroom as well as this rubric to follow.
