This 71-page no-prep, no planning document has everything you need to introduce your students to geography, cartography, mapping and navigation - En Français!

This cross-curricular pedagogical document will provide you with a 37-page slide deck, complete with terms, definitions, examples, discussion prompts, images, games and activities. It also includes a 33-page student workbook complete with printable worksheets, activities, partner work, research, a final project as well as answer keys, a final project rubric and success criteria.

My slides are never babyish and are suitable for grades 4 through 7. They are suitable for students "en adaptation scolaire," or as a simple introduction to concepts covered in grades 5-7. I teach grades 5 and 6, and this works wonderfully for us!

The first half of the document is your teachable slide deck. In it, you'll find:

• A "Would you rather" style game as a warm up!
• A reflection question.
• A discussion prompt to illicit prior knowledge.
• An in-depth look at some of the earliest maps, their history, their evolution, their purpose, the material used and the process behind them.
• A look at modern mapping and their multiple uses, multiple purposes and multiple features.
• An explanation of scale and "scaling" a map.
• An in-depth look at grids, reticles and the map network with an emphasis on lines of longitude and latitude, the poles, the equator and the meridian.
• Discussion prompts about the measurement of diameter on our spherical planet.
• A look at the different hemispheres (N, S, E and W.)
• Group discussion prompts about continents and how we read a map of the world.
• Fun Facts about the Canadian provinces.
• Explanations (with visuals!) of different reference maps (physical and topographic).
• A comparison of "good" maps and "bad" maps and the need to be precise and to follow specific criteria when it comes to map-making.
• An activity on labeling Canada.

The notes and fill in the blanks are in PDF form. A link to a google slides that you can make a copy of is included at the end of the notes section.

Even though we simplify it for students, we will need to be ready to verbally or visually explain the concept. Not all students are ready for this high-level concept. I often found when I was teaching the 5 Geographical Themes, students grasp location, place, human-environment interaction & movement (ideas, people, goods), but they struggle with regions: formal, functional, and perceptual.

What is the difference between a formal, functional, and perceptual region?

What is a nodal point? How can there be regions that cannot be measured and are specifically based on feelings and perceptions? Can all regions be found on a map? Do they always have a clearly defined boundary?

This PowerPoint provides 7 scenarios in which students are required to decipher whether it is a formal, functional, or perceptual region. You can use it as an introduction or review. You may implement this in different ways.

A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will become familiar with world religions’ cultural hearth, beliefs, and practices.
• The learner will recognize and understand key terms of each world religion.
• The learner will examine the beliefs, traditions, and customs of the major religions of the world.
• The learner will determine the similarities and differences between each world religion.

MATERIALS:

• Copies of each gallery, laminated for future use and durability. (Place these around the room or in the hall if more room is needed)
• Use adhesive to adhere all 12 gallery sheets to the wall, spread out as if you were in a gallery.
• Post-it notes for each group
• A clipboard or a piece of paper for each group to place their sticky notes on as they move around the room.

World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.

This geography and science lesson is intriguing and engaging! The construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the largest hydropower project in the world — that took 18 years to build and over 40,000 workers,—has sparked numerous controversies and debates regarding its impact on the environment.

One of the most intriguing claims is that the immense weight of the dam's reservoir has caused the rotation of the Earth to slow down. Some scientists argue that the shift in mass could potentially affect the Earth's rotation, while other scientists neglect the belief. The Earth's rotation is influenced by a multitude of factors, including natural processes such as earthquakes and the melting of polar ice caps, making it unlikely that the Three Gorges Dam alone could significantly slow down the planet. Students will work together to complete the Doodle Notes that go along with the PowerPoint presentation. Students will hypothesis whether the Three Gorges Dam has slowed the earth.

Note: This lesson supports the idea that the dam has slowed the earth's rotation and provides the scientific backing for it. Please feel free to modify this lesson to support one or the other side.
