Quotation Marks in Dialogue

By Sign with me TOD

As our students are completing written assignments, using quotation marks in dialogue can be confusing. Students need to remember to use a comma before or after a quote, a capital letter when a statement is made by a character, descriptive tags, and quotation marks. Students can get easily confused when learning how to show dialogue between characters when they are having a conversation. In this product, students review why quotation marks are used in dialogue, complete sentences to show dialogue (adding in commas and quotation marks), make corrections to sentences by adding missing commas or quotation marks, make up sentences to show dialogue based on picture scenarios, make up sentences without picture scenarios that include dialogue, and students also have the opportunity to write a short story that include at least 5 communication exchanges between characters that include capitalization, commas, quotation marks, and descriptive tags.

Shakespeare Digital Bell Ringer Journal Prompts for Distance Learning

By Language Arts Excellence

This resource features a digital set of 25 reader response journal prompts to complement your Shakespeare unit and support distance learning using Google Drive. Each bell ringer is comprised of a Shakespearean quote from one of his plays or sonnets and a thoughtfully crafted question that encourages students to personally connect and appreciate the timelessness of his work. Prompts can be used as bell-ringers (most popular and mean the first 5 minutes of every class for more than a month are planned for you!), summarizers, stations, full class or small group discussion questions, for homework, task cards, sub plans, as a filler activity… the possibilities are endless!

Example of a prompt:

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players… and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages” ~ As You Like It

What types of roles do you play in your own life? How do these roles differ and to what audience(s) are they played? Why do we find ourselves playing different roles for different people within our lives?

Enjoy using these bell ringers during your study of any Shakespearean play or any time throughout the year when you just need to hear a few wise words from the Bard!

Simply print and go! This packet can be used in a multitude of ways, and not solely for sub work.

There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect for:

  • sub plans
  • fun Fridays
  • bell ringers
  • homework
  • test prep
  • review
  • assessment

HOW TO USE THIS ACTIVITY...

Students can complete all six worksheets as part of a packet, but if you don't see them for a full block then assign only one page each day you're out (you'll get even more bang for your buck!) This packet has so many uses beyond sub work - use it any time of year for a no-prep, yet FUN learning activity that kids will actually enjoy doing! All answer keys are included!

I always leave my sub binder on my desk for a sub, administrator, or colleague to grab in case of an emergency. I feel at ease knowing my students are engaged, productive, and learning even when I have to be out of the classroom.
