This unit connects learning with technology to English Language Arts/Reading. This lesson teaches students about idioms and guides them through using shapes and other graphic features in Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides to create an idiom. This rubric looks at 7 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a graphic novel. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: parts of a graphic novel, graphic novel cover page details, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, visuals, and special lettering/speech balloons. This rubric scores writing a graphic novel out of 21 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

This is a bundle of two resources focused on Ellen Raskin's book The Westing Game. The first resource is a movement-focused comprehension activity in which students are assigned character cards and have to ask each other yes/no questions in order to figure out their classmates' characters. The second resource is a creative writing activity that student can complete right before they finish the book. Students should stop reading at the start of chapter 24 and write their own ending to the book.

This is a fun, engaging mini-project in which students act as newspaper staff writer and illustrator for Poe's most gruesome tales, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat. The project is differentiated for multiple learning styles and is a fun way to bring the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to life! I recommend giving this assignment after reading both stories as close to Halloween as possible. This assignment works just as well in class as it does for homework.

Utilize any of these three summary pages as a way for students to record summaries of a chapter in any novel they read.

Instruct students to complete the pages as needed.

These are the directions I typically give for filling out summaries:

Print off as many pages as your student will need to complete chapter summaries for each chapter in their book or each assigned section of their reading in order to summarize their book accurately.

I have also provided a cover page, allowing students to collect all their pages together and submit a completed project. A basic rubric is included as well.

You may hear about natural disasters often, but some of the deadliest disasters in world history have been environmental disasters caused by human activity. This lesson involves having your students investigate environmental disasters that have taken place on our planet. Their initial focus will be to examine the Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union. After closely exploring the historical background to this accident, students will then choose and research a different environment disaster, and create a Google Slide presentation to demonstrate their findings.
