Set #1: Great Depression and Of Mice and Men Graphic Organizer Packet

Students read two Common Lit articles and observe/analyze images related to the Great Depression and Migrant workers (Links to all images and articles are provided - actual articles are NOT included. only links).

Students will observe, read, analyze, and make evidence-based inferences related to the Great Depression and the lives of migrant workers. Students will then use these texts (articles and images) to make connections to the characters / events in the book Of Mice and Men. The graphic organizers require students to cite evidence from both the articles, images, and the book to support their analysis, conclusions, and observations.

✅ The two graphic organizers contain the same information, but one of them is differentiated for lower-level students.

✅ The differentiated version graphic organizer includes paraphrased, step-by-step instructions as well as examples of how to think about the information they observed in the images and read in the articles. These examples will increase their understanding of how to think about information and complete the graphic organizer appropriately.

This three-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides a summary of women's roles and contributions during the Industrial Revolution and Gilded Age in the United States. It covers the time between 1865 and 1900. After the Civil War ended, the economy in the North and Midwest began to expand with the growth of factories and railroads. As a result, immigration increased and distinct social classes developed, creating different experiences for women. These impacts will be addressed in separate resources about women and industrialization.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

If you like World War II historical fiction, I have written a book called Hearts of War about a Nisei soldier who served in the Military Intelligence Service and a woman who served in the Women Army Corps. This 45-page EDITABLE unit tracks the development of the sonnet from Shakespeare's day through by Harlem Renaissance. How are traditional sonnets written by English poets like Shakespeare and Keats similar to and/or different from modern sonnets written by Harlem Renaissance poets like Claude McKay and Countee Cullen? This unit invites students to compare traditional sonnets focused on love with modern sonnets focused on socioeconomic equality....

The twelve poems are divided into two reading packets, with the first packet focusing on early sonnets about romantic love, and the second packet focusing on modern sonnets about the black experience. Each reading packets is followed by a classwork packet that contains a quiz on literary devices, discussion questions for two poems, and quick writes. Finally, a third packet features a writing assignment, sample student paper, and glossary of literary devices.

Here's a detailed account of what you'll find in this 45-page curriculum:

• Homework Packets with Poems: The two homework packets contain a total of 12 love poems by award-winning poets such as William Shakespeare, Christina Rossetti, John Keats, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, and others. While the first packet focuses on traditional love poetry, the second packet focuses on modern love poetry. Thus, the two packets will set you up to facilitate fascinating discussions about how the sonnet has been put to different uses over the centuries! (12 pages)

• Literary Devices Glossary: A glossary with definitions and examples of the various types of figurative language, imagery, sound devices, and syntactic devices. Many teachers already have a glossary of literary devices, but I'm providing this in case you need one. (2 pages)

• Literary Devices Quizzes: Open each class with a quiz of 10 questions to assess whether students can accurately identify the literary devices found in poems from the packet: metaphor, personification, symbolism, imagery, alliteration, etc. Answer keys included. (4 pages).

• Discussion Questions: This unit features a list of discussion questions for two poems in each of the two homework packets. The discussion questions will ensure that each class discussion is focused and productive. Every discussion question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to arrive at lucid interpretive insights! The questions lend themselves to a range of different pedagogical uses: 1) to focus students’ thinking prior to beginning a discussion, 2) to prompt in-class writing, 3) to assign written reflections for homework, etc. Guaranteed to elicit student engagement and foster deep thinking! • Quick Writes: The quick writes give students an opportunity to capture and refine the best ideas generated in the discussion. Quick writes can also help reticent students to gather their thoughts so they'll feel ready and eager to contribute. (4 pages)

The assignment sheet contains detailed instructions for how to generate a formalist analysis of a poem (analyzing how the poem's formal features contribute to its meaning). This St. Patrick's Day Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it for St. Patrick's Day or any day! This is a 207-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!
Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Students read two Common Lit articles and observe/analyze images related to the Great Depression and Migrant workers (Links to all images and articles are provided - actual articles are NOT included. only links).

Students will observe, read, analyze, and make evidence-based inferences related to the Great Depression and the lives of migrant workers. Students will then use these texts (articles and images) to make connections to the characters / events in the book Of Mice and Men. The graphic organizers require students to cite evidence from both the articles, images, and the book to support their analysis, conclusions, and observations.

✅ The two graphic organizers contain the same information, but one of them is differentiated for lower-level students.

✅ The differentiated version graphic organizer includes paraphrased, step-by-step instructions as well as examples of how to think about the information they observed in the images and read in the articles. These examples will increase their understanding of how to think about information and complete the graphic organizer appropriately.

✅ These graphic organizers are excellent for Do Now, Launch, Group work, and/or Research activities. They can also be used to set a purpose for listening/watching video clips used to supplement lessons. It's a great tool to help build students' background/prior knowledge for upcoming units/topics!

This short four-page close reading and worksheet activity provides an overview of how women participated in the military during World War II. It covers nurses and the women who supported the other branches of the military: the Women Army Corps (WAC), the WAVES (Navy), SPARS (Coast Guard), Marines and WASPs. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

This FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE STATIONS activity is a fun and effective method for giving students practice at analyzing the most important types of figurative language. Students will develop the skills not only to identify types of figurative language but also to explain how figurative language contributes to the meaning of a literary text!

Students will learn about figurative language while gaining exposure to the most profound and thought-provoking quotations from the world's greatest writers! They'll be asked to analyze the figures of speech in over 120 inspiring quotations by a diverse range of important authors: Chinua Achebe, Louisa May Alcott, Maya Angelou, Jane Austen, James Baldwin, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, John Donne, Louise Erdrich, F.
