Preparing for Social Situations SEL Presentation + Activity
By Erin Cusumano
This lesson teaches students about the value of thinking ahead before entering new/challenging social situations, walks through how to do so, and uses a worksheet for practice.
The aim of the lesson is to give students the tools to think ahead- working goal setting and self-management skills. The main takeaways from this lesson should be the value of learning about social norms, goal setting, planning ahead, and how to do these things. It is also stressed that while social norms may feel ambiguous they are most often specific and can be learned.
The lesson includes a presentation (10 slides), a worksheet (2 pages), and a presentation guide (3 pages).
The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

Social Awareness SEL Lesson Using "They're Made Out of Meat" by Terry Bisson
By Ms. J's ELA
This social emotional learning lesson uses Terry Bisson's short story They're Made Out of Meat. During this SEL lesson, students complete a pre-reading activity, read the short story (not included), answer questions related to the text, and contemplate the ways that they can demonstrate social awareness. In particular, this lesson focuses on the idea of excluding others. Students are asked to think about the reasons they exclude others and what they might be missing by excluding people. There is also an opportunity for whole class discussion regarding the idea of social awareness.
This lesson also focuses on short paragraph writing. The presentation contains an outline and example of a 6 sentence response. Students will first collect evidence to support a response about the identity of the short story's speakers. Then, they will practice writing the 6 sentence paragraph supporting their claim about the identity of the speakers.
This resource includes:
- a slides presentation to follow: 6 sentence paragraph outline and example, discussion questions
- 5 worksheets: pre-reading, an activity to help students determine the identity of the story's speakers, questions about social awareness in the text, and a reflection about themselves to increase self-awareness
- a teaching guide

Making Responsible Decisions w/ Values SEL Lesson + Worksheet
By Erin Cusumano
This lesson provides a framework (including a step-by-step break down) for decision making. A pivotal part of the framework is applying values to help you decide on the best choice for you. Values are explored, promoting self-awareness, and incorporated into decision making skills. The lesson also differentiates between consequential and inconsequential decisions to encourage thinking about what choices require more thought and energy.
As middle and high schoolers are headed toward bigger, more consequential decisions this lesson enables them to identify their values and emphasizes the role knowing your values plays in making choices that align with the life students want and the people students want to be.
The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.
This lesson includes presentation notes (discussion points and questions slide-by-slide included) (2 pages), slides to present (8 slides) , and a worksheet (1 page).

This Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activity helps high school students build emotional awareness and learn how to manage difficult situations with positive thinking. The activity includes realistic scenarios that students may encounter, such as friendship conflicts, social media issues, and misunderstandings with parents or peers. For each scenario, students write their initial reactions and thoughts, then practice reframing those thoughts into positive coping strategies.
By guiding students to reflect on their emotions and find healthier ways to respond, this activity promotes emotional regulation, problem-solving, and resilience. It's perfect for advisory classes, counseling groups, or SEL lessons, and encourages students to develop a growth mindset when facing challenges.
