Less than $5 8th Grade Social Emotional Learning Activities

This lesson provides a framework (including a step-by-step break downs and examples) for situations where disagreement arises. The lesson covers when it is productive to voice disagreement, when it is not, steps to handle both situations, and how to move past disagreement when it is not able to be resolved.

With middle and high school students I find this topic is relevant just about everyday in the classroom with peers and staff. I carefully made this lesson to cover disagreement neutrally, not framing it as universally good or bad, but dependent on context and delivery.

This lesson is a great chance to add in activities that promote self-advocacy and larger themes of pro-social communication. The lesson includes a presentation (10 slides), a worksheet (2 pages), and a presentation guide (1 page). With other free sources (which I discuss in the presentation guide) I made this lesson span over 4 days.

The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

⭐ *Part 1: *The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.

⭐ *Part 2: *The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.

**▶️ Variation #2: **This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." SELF-ASSESSMENT

This resource includes a single Social Cues Self-Assessment. Students will use social cues statements to reflect on their ability to recognize, interpret, and respond to nonverbal signals in everyday social situations. They will score the statements using the following scale: 2 for “Regularly,” 1 for “Occasionally,” and 0 for “Never.”  

Students will use this assessment as a tool to recognize strengths, spot areas for growth, and build stronger, more empathetic communication skills.

This product includes 2 social story that focuses on showing self-control. Vocabulary that is reviewed and discussed in depth include – self-control, self-discipline, decision making, and self-talk - negative and positive self-talk.

Students will also learn about the following - Recognizing positive and negative self-talk, and tips to think about before you act. Two social stories that focus on showing self-control are included in this product. The social stories include comprehension questions throughout. Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of the characters. This product encourages students to understand the importance of showing self-control, self-discipline, making good decisions, the importance of having self-control, being a good friend, treating people the way you want to be treated, and changing situations for the better.

At the end of the product, you will find 4 role-playing cards that relate with showing self-control. Students can role-play each situation and talk about how they would feel if they were in the situation.

This resource should accompany the play The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. This resource includes a notes sheet with resources for students to learn about the four communication styles: passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive. Students are asked to think about their own communication styles.

There is also a Google Slides assignment for students to complete by explaining the communication styles of the characters in The Diary of Anne Frank. Students should name the style that they feel best fits each character and explain their reasoning.
