Classical Music Activities for January | Listening Buddies ✪
By Agee and Row Classical Music Appreciation
Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to add classical music to your classroom or homeschool? Classical music has been shown to provide numerous benefits for children, including reducing stress, improving focus and concentration, and increasing creativity. These activities are great for music appreciation and also help build social-emotional skills! Each activity is easy to set up (no glue required!) and a great way to engage students for the New Year in January.
Listening Buddies sheets feature a piece of classical music with the composer’s name. While the music plays, students draw a scene in the box inspired by the music. They can also explore the feelings and mood of a piece by choosing meaningful keywords that match their listening experience. Students color the listening buddy at the top of the page or you can print the color version.
There are no wrong answers, and no musical training is required. Just print and play! Music is available on YouTube or your preferred streaming service.
This activity pack features one music selection from January Mindful Listening! Students can color their black & white listening buddy page topper or you can print the color version.

This worksheet allows children to draw a picture of a place that makes them feel happy that they can imagine themselves in when they feel anxious.
Why do you need this?
Drawing a picture of a happy place serves as a coping strategy for children experiencing anxiety. It provides them with a tangible tool to manage their emotions and redirect their focus to a positive and comforting mental space.
Visualizing and imagining themselves in a happy place can help children regulate their emotions during moments of anxiety. The act of drawing and picturing themselves in a calming environment promotes relaxation and reduces stress levels.
How and when might you use this?
This worksheet can be used in a variety of ways:
· During social-emotional lessons focused on managing emotions, regulation, and anxiety. Students can draw their happy place and share their drawings with classmates, fostering a sense of community and empathy.
· During counselling sessions with students who experience anxiety. It provides a structured activity for children to explore their emotions and coping mechanisms in a safe and supportive environment.
· During mindfulness or relaxation practices.

An eco-map is often used an assessment tool in clinical mental health settings, but can be a beneficial SEL activity for social awareness. This exercise can be modified for small children all the way through adults.
The graph asks the participant to picture their social life as an ecosystem where they are at the center. In the blank space around them they can write in all of their formal and informal social ties and resources they have. (For younger children I suggest offering the option to draw the people in their life!) For further reflection, the participant can then add a + to signify if the person/resource is a positive part of their life, a - to signify if the person/resource is a negative part of their life, or write +- to signify a give and take relationship.
I use this worksheet along with social awareness lessons to encourage students to think about who they can ask for help from, who they have as supports, or reflect on relationships. It also allows you to gain insight into your students' life and resources outside of the classroom.

Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure (positive and negative) both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making, behaviors, emotions, and self-esteem. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations when dealing with negative peer pressure and hard to take risks when experiencing positive peer pressure.
