Music:Getting To Know You Questionnaire & Ideal Music Classroom(Back to School)

By MsNerdWood

This is a great back to school activity to get to know your students in music class: Music: Getting To Know You Questionnaire and Your Ideal Music Classroom (Back to School Activity). The questionnaire is a chance for you to get to know your students and their experiences in music. I use this for grade 6-8. The second part of this activity is for students to design their ideal music classroom. Typically I pair this activity with my Apple Curator Assignment which can be found here: https://www.TeachShare.com/Product/Apple-Music-Curator-Playlist-Assignment-Great-for-Back-to-School-2739247 These two activities will usually take the better part of September to complete. The Greatest Night in Pop (2024) movie analysis questions! We Are the World!

By The Red-Haired Reader

On January 28th, 1985, dozens of the time period’s most popular musicians gathered in Los Angeles to record a charity song for African famine relief. Setting stylistic differences and egos aside, they collaborated on a song that would make history. This documentary, which debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, examines how the song came to be, who was involved, and the implications of the recording.

This Doc (printable OR digital) asks students 9 thought-provoking questions for during and after viewing the film. This is NOT a guided viewing assignment; it's a series of thought-provoking questions that asks them to consider the film as a whole and to synthesize what they might already know about these musicians and the event with what they saw in the film. They are asked about the title, the lyrics to "We Are The World", the impact of the event, who planned the event and why, the artists who participated, the arrangement of the recording, the public's response, the impact of the song during this particular time period, etc.

I use this with my high school elective "Lyrics as Literature" with 9-12th graders, but I'd feel comfortable using it with upper middle school students as well.

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the modern Broadway composer, Leonard Bernstein and his work, as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This lesson is intended to be an introduction to the topic and was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well. This lesson could be used in a music, drama, history or technology class and is also a great lesson to leave for a substitute teacher!

Boom Oops Boom! (Poison Rhythm/Poison Pattern)

By Jason Litt

One of the favorite end-of-the-year (or even beginning-of-the-year) activities for the kids to get them sight reading and of course, keeping their eyes and ears out for one of those DEADLY Poison Rhythms/Poison Patterns! Boom Oops Boom! takes students through 78 slides and 5 levels of Boomwhacker sight reading. Students will play a variety of rhythms as the teacher scrolls through the slides. Each slide contains one rhythm they will play and after advancing to the next slide, you can elect to give them a 4 beat or 2 beat prep to read the next rhythm, whichever works for you. The less prep they have, the better because... there will be one rhythm (the poison rhythm, poison pattern, or OOPS! rhythm as we'll call it) that students DO NOT play! If they do, they're out of the game. Students learn the rhythm before the round is played. Be careful or you will be ELIMINATED! You can play this in teams, colors, chords, however you wish! There are 5 background grooves that go from 80 bpm to 120 bpm to challenge your kids as they go through the levels. Levels begin with 4 beat rhythms and end with 6 beat rhythms with rests, quarter notes, and 2 eighth note patterns. Have a great time with this!

Bass Clef Spoons Game

By HiggyBs Choir

Turn note reading into a lively, competitive game with the Treble Clef Spoons Game! Based on the classic game of spoons, this activity helps students practice spelling and identifying notes in the treble clef while having fun.
How to Play:

  1. Set Up:
  • Choose whether to play with 3-letter words or 4-letter words. Each word corresponds to note names (e.g., CAB, EFG).
  • Deal each student a card with a word on it. Ensure that there’s one less spoon than the number of players and place the spoons in the center of the table.
  1. Gameplay:
  • Students sit in a circle, and the teacher deals four note name cards to each player. The rest of the note name cards are placed in a draw pile.
  • The goal is for students to collect the note name cards needed to spell the word on their card. They do this by drawing one card from the draw pile and discarding one card to the player on their left.
  • Students pass cards around the circle quickly, trying to collect the letters they need.
  1. Grabbing Spoons:
  • As soon as a player successfully spells their word, they grab a spoon from the center of the table.
  • Once one player grabs a spoon, all other players must quickly try to grab a spoon too.
  • The player who is left without a spoon is out of the round.
  1. Winning the Game:
  • The game continues until only one player is left or until you decide to start a new round.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Interactive Learning: Reinforces treble clef note reading in a fast-paced, engaging way.
  • Customizable Difficulty: Choose between 3-letter and 4-letter words to match your students' skill levels.
  • Fun for All Ages: Perfect for young music students who are learning note names, this game combines learning with fun competition.

Perfect for:

  • Music Classrooms: A fantastic group activity for reinforcing note reading and spelling in a fun, social setting.
  • Piano Lessons: Ideal for individual or small group lessons to practice treble clef note identification.
  • At-Home Practice: Parents can use this game to help their child improve note recognition skills while playing.

Add the Treble Clef Spoons Game to your teaching toolkit and watch your students eagerly master their note reading skills through fun and friendly competition!
