What should I know about Florence Price?

Florence Price wove the soulful rhythms of African American spirituals and folk tunes into classical music, forever changing its tapestry. Though she faced many challenges as a Black woman composer in the early 20th century, her talent blazed a trail, paving the way for generations to come. But she wasn't just a folklorist; her works like the Symphony in E Minor showcased her mastery of orchestral techniques, earning her the prestigious W.C. Handy Award in 1933 – a first for a Black woman composer. She championed the works of other Black composers, and actively nurtured young musicians, her passion for education and inclusivity ensuring her legacy reached far beyond the concert hall.

What types of differentiated listening activities are included?

• Listening Sheet - There are no wrong answers! Students can note how they feel and what they imagine while listening to a selected piece of music. Choose from musical instruments, nature scenes, colors, and more.
• Weather & Feelings - Weather is a recurring theme in classical music. Does a musical piece remind the listener of a snowy day or a cheerful sunny afternoon? Students can select the weather symbols that come to mind. Is the music happy or sad? A set of emotional characters allows your group to pick the feelings that best relate to a piece of music.
• Listen & Color a Carnival - Students can color a carnival while listening to the selected music! Which carnival rides and activities would best fit a piece of music? Does the tempo feel like a roller coaster or a peaceful swing ride in the sky? Choose a tasty treat from the snack bar, then stop at the prize booth before finishing. There are no wrong answers!
• Emoji Checkbox Listening - This listening sheet style is all about checkboxes! Students note how they feel and what they imagine while listening to a selected piece of music. These ADORABLE song cards are a FUN & EASY way to incorporate active movement songs into your classroom! I put these cards on the wall in my classroom near my circle carpet and let the children take turns picking out their favorite songs during our music & movement (dance party) time. These versatile cards can also be used in a pocket chart, laminated and placed on a metal binder ring, or used to make song sticks.

Creating a Movie using Microsoft Story Remix utilizes the free software from Microsoft as a part of Photos, available in Windows 10 and above. It allows students to create a movie using still pictures or video clips. You will need Windows 10 (or higher) on your computer to access and use it.

In these lessons, students are provided with links to several excellent tutorials (both print and video versions), as well as links to other resources to help them with their designs.

There are two projects included with this lesson to allow the teacher and student a choice in how to demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Story Remix. Use one, both, or let students choose!

Need a resource that is a creative and intuitive way to work on the notes of the treble clef staff?

In “Fully Staffed” students will see several notes on the Treble Clef staff. They will then be asked to identify one specific note out of all of the notes shown. By process of deduction, or even using previous knowledge, they’ll have to find the note as fast as they can, either individually, as a class, or team vs team, boys v girls, however you wish! As soon as they’ve locked in their answer, advance the slide, and the correct note will be revealed by illuminating green

I like to have the students challenge either other and see who can be the first student to name the note

• Level One: Find one note out of 3 listed (ex, find the “E”)

• Level Two: Find one note out of 4 listed (ex, find the “F”)

• Level Three: Find two notes listed out of a melodic figure (ex, find “A” and “D”)

Nothing like catching two curriculum areas in one. This assignment will help you meet expectations in both music and language. Students are asked to analyze poetry and lyrics, both those used in class and those of their own choosing. The assignment has students looking at: * vocabulary used * structure * techniques * important words * feelings Students are also asked to consider how the poem/music is meant to be performed. They are also asked to consider the background of the poet/musician.

SET 3: Two Measure cards in 4/4 time using Quarter Notes, and Quarter Rests.

These flashcards are a great compliment to your resource library! Each set is 1 to 2 measures of a vast variety of rhythms to build sight reading, fluency, and rhythmic skills in the music classroom. The flashcards can be used in both the classroom and private studio setting. They are small enough for you to slip into a binder, or envelop if you are a traveling teacher! You can also slip these under a document camera, or stick them on a music stand for rapid fire reading with your kiddos!

For optimal durability, I recommend printing on heavier paper, cutting each section out, and laminating the cards. Binding is up to you, but you can hole punch and put them on binder rings, or have each set coil bound.

Use this new book which was published this year to practice and review ta and ti-ti rhythms! Start out by discussing with students their good and bad days, and then read the story. Use the chant to practice and reinforce steady beat and rhythm. Then, use the visual chart to decode for those rhythms. Add in small percussion instruments if you desire, to make this more fun! Use for grades PreK-2.

Enhance your students' solfege skills with this comprehensive practice resource designed to reinforce note reading and pitch recognition in the keys of C, F, and G. This product includes a set of practice sheets, each featuring six lines of exercises per page.

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the history of musical instruments, as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Then, students research their choice of one instrument and create a presentation or a video about it using their choice of Web 2.0 tools such as Adobe Creative Express (formerly Adobe Spark), eMaze, Canva, etc. (all are free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups.
