Stress management explores identifying stress as a process that takes place in the brain and body, identifying when stress can be helpful (eustress), when stress becomes overwhelming (distress), and emphasizes the use of coping skills to mitigate the negative effects of stress.

Coping skills explore multiple options for positive copings skills and encourages students to identify one that works for them. The lesson looks at positive vs. negative coping skills, problem-focused vs. emotion-focused coping skills, and how coping skills work to affect thoughts, feelings and actions.

This social emotional learning lesson uses Amy Tan's short story Fish Cheeks. The short story is not included in this resource, but it can be found online. The focus of this lesson is embracing our own differences.

Though we wish otherwise, grief is a topic that cannot always be avoided, even at a young age. This curriculum offers materials for SIX WEEKS of meetings, discussions, and activities. This curriculum is designed to fit the needs of middle school students (grades 5-8), though it can easily be tailored or adjusted to fit many different age ranges. I find older kids often know their preferred copings skills and have often already spent time with their helping adults exploring/practicing them. So, this lesson does NOT teach specific coping skills. Instead, it explains what is going on in the brain and body when stress is felt, how stress is natural and normal, and why use of coping skills is important to capitalize on stress when we need it. Teaching about stress as normal, and even positive, offers a validating and empowering approach to encouraging the use of positive coping skills.

The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

This no-prep lesson covers the social emotional learning competency- responsible decision-making! Ray Bradbury's classic short story A Sound of Thunder provides students ample opportunity to analyze the decisions that characters make. This also provides an opening for teachers to talk with students about making responsible decisions in their own lives. The story is not included in this resource, but can be easily found online.

This resource is half ELA aligned and half SEL aligned. You will find comprehension, setting, and theme questions along with questions designed to make students think about their own decision making processes and the decisions of characters within the short story.

This resource contains:

• A Pre-Reading Activity where students are asked to think about their own decision making processes.

• A 20 Question Reading Quiz to check student comprehension of the short story.

• A 10 Slide Presentation to accompany the student worksheets. This presentation also contains a definition of responsible decision-making and a class discussion question.

This product includes 2 social stories that focus on feeling fearful or scared. The 3rd social story in this product focuses on feeling worried/nervous. Each short story includes comprehension questions throughout. Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of the characters who are experiencing a problem. Students will review what feeling scared means, what can scare us, what you may do when you feel scared, how to handle situations where we feel scared, the difference between feeling scared and worried, and how to face our fears. Examples of feeling scared, worried/nervous are included in this product.

This social emotional learning lesson uses Terry Bisson's short story They're Made Out of Meat. During this SEL lesson, students complete a pre-reading activity, read the short story (not included), answer questions related to the text, and contemplate the ways that they can demonstrate social awareness. In particular, this lesson focuses on the idea of excluding others. Students are asked to think about the reasons they exclude others and what they might be missing by excluding people. There is also an opportunity for whole class discussion regarding the idea of social awareness.

This lesson also focuses on short paragraph writing. The presentation contains an outline and example of a 6 sentence response. Students will first collect evidence to support a response about the identity of the short story's speakers. Then, they will practice writing the 6 sentence paragraph supporting their claim about the identity of the speakers.

This resource includes:

- a slides presentation to follow: 6 sentence paragraph outline and example, discussion questions

- 5 worksheets: pre-reading, an activity to help students determine the identity of the story's speakers, questions about social awareness in the text, and a reflection about themselves to increase self-awareness

This interactive, fun, and lighthearted activity is made for a creative way to discuss identity and the growth and change that comes with becoming who we hope to be and the impact we hope to make. This activity includes a digital download that is ready to go for your next classroom lesson - included in the presentation is a "ready for use" Google Slide (adjust and personalize if needed), an interactive icebreaker, directions for the main activity (Blindfolded Self-Portraits!), reflection questions, and discussion points throughout the lesson. Check the speaker notes section for extra tips and tricks for implementation! My students absolutely LOVED this activity and I especially loved the discussion that came with it. It is a must each year for my middle school students now - but I can envision this activity being successful for multiple grade levels - Upper elementary, middle, and high school! All you need to prep is a blank piece of paper for each student and this lesson is all ready for your use!
