Stress Management SEL Presentation + Worksheet
By Erin Cusumano
This lesson emphasizes identifying stress as a process that takes place in the brain and body, identifying when stress can be helpful (eustress), when stress becomes overwhelming (distress), and emphasizes the use of coping skills to mitigate the negative effects of stress.
I find older kids often know their preferred copings skills and have often already spent time with their helping adults exploring/practicing them. So, this lesson does NOT teach specific coping skills. Instead, it explains what is going on in the brain and body when stress is felt, how stress is natural and normal, and why use of coping skills is important to capitalize on stress when we need it. Teaching about stress as normal, and even positive, offers a validating and empowering approach to encouraging the use of positive coping skills.
The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.
This lesson includes presentation notes (discussion points and questions slide-by-slide included) (2 pages), slides to present (8 slides) , and a worksheet (1 page).

By MsNerdWood
Curriculum connections: Music, Language, Visual Art Grades: 6-8 What is Included: Songza Assignment (rough copy and final assignment with writing/art), Lesson Ideas, a rubric. About this Assignment: This is a great back to school lesson to use with students in September. It provides students with a chance to reflect on their music preferences while learning about musical terms, and about an online music streaming site. It is a chance for your students to curate their own playlists. This activity is suitable for grade 6-8 students. This activity also gives teachers a chance to get to know the music preferences of their students to help create future lessons based on their interests. This lesson could be adapted to be used with other online music streaming websites. The lesson also encourages students to start to discuss music in ways beyond “I like this song”. They can start to learn about the categories in Songza such as genre and decade. There is a short writing piece included so that students can express why they selected the songs they did for their own Songza Playlists. This assignment can be adapted and used to suit the needs of your students.
Early Women's Rights Movement, 1840-1865: PPT *U.S. History*
By Christa Nonnemaker
This 19-slide PowerPoint presentation covers the early years of the Women’s Rights Movement in the United States, from 1840 through 1865. It is an ideal lesson for the antebellum time period or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.
Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight how the Women’s Rights Movement developed during these twenty-five years. It points to the influential role of abolition in helping women to become activists and then the realization that women needed to take action on their own behalf. Key women are highlighted including the giants of the era such as Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth.
If you would like the actual PowerPoint slides, please email me at cnonnemaker@gmail.com and I will happily send them to you after you purchase.
There is also an Easel Assessment. For Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is a valuable digital tool.
This is part of the Women in American History Series which includes PowerPoint lessons as well as Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Analyzing Primary Sources and DBQ's and more!

Do you or your students like WWII historical fiction? In Hearts at War, Tosh and Betty come of age in Southern California only to have their lives severed by war, family and social pressures once they enter college. Coincidence will throw them together again in the Pacific theater of war as they both serve in the military. Will they be able face the challenges of war and find a way to one another? In writing Hearts at War, I wanted to bring an unknown aspect of history to light. Available on Amazon or Kindle/Kindle Unlimited. Young Adults/Adults/Interracial Romance. I appreciate any reviews!
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE in POETRY: Analyze Poems w/ Metaphors, Similes, Symbols, etc
By Rigorous Resources for High School English
This 50-page EDITABLE poetry unit promises to elicit dynamic engagement from all students without compromising on intellectual rigor. The 12 poems in this unit pivot on the use of FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, etc.
Teach your students how to analyze figurative language through a series of engaging lessons on poems that students are guaranteed to love. The literary device quizzes, discussion prompts, and analytical writing assignment will challenge your students to dig beneath the surface of the text and generate profound interpretive insights!
Here are some highlights from this 50-page curriculum:
• Homework Packets with Poems: The two homework packets contain a total of 12 poems by award-winning poets such as Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Elizabeth Bishop, Richard Wilbur, Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelou, Julia Alvarez, Mark Doty, Sharon Olds, and others. The poems in each homework packet derive their meaning from the deft use of sensory images. These carefully selected poems will set the stage for your class to have fascinating and profoundly productive discussions!! (12 pages)
• Literary Devices Glossary: A glossary with definitions and examples of the various types of figurative language, imagery, stanzas, and syntactic devices. Many teachers already have a glossary of literary devices, but I'm providing this in case you need one. (2 pages)
• Literary Devices Quizzes: Open each class with a quiz of 10 questions to assess whether your students can accurately identify the literary devices found in poems from the packet: metaphor, personification, symbolism, imagery, alliteration, etc. The digital versions of the quizzes on Google Forms will grade every student's work and generate a list of their scores. Answer keys included. (4 pages).
• Discussion Questions: This bundle features a list of discussion questions for two poems in each of two homework packets. The discussion questions will ensure that your class discussions get off to a productive start. Every discussion question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to arrive at lucid interpretive insights! The questions lend themselves to a range of different pedagogical uses: 1) to focus students’ thinking prior to beginning a discussion, 2) to prompt in-class writing, 3) to assign written reflections for homework, etc. Guaranteed to elicit student engagement and foster deep thinking! Answer keys included. (16 pages)
• Quick Writes: The quick writes give students an opportunity to capture and refine the best ideas generated in the discussion. Quick writes can also help reticent students to gather their thoughts so they'll feel ready and eager to contribute. (4 pages)
• Analytical Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on a poem of their choice. The assignment sheet contains detailed instructions for how to generate a formalist analysis of a poem (analyzing how the poem's formal features contribute to its meaning). This kind of formalist analysis is exactly what students are asked to generate on the AP Literature exam! Sample paper included. (3 pages)
This entire 50-page unit will come to you in two separate formats: Word *and* PDF. Because the Word doc is fully editable, you'll be able to customize the materials to suit the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access all of the materials as a PDF — which is easy to navigate and quick to print! Finally, as a free bonus, I'm including links to digital copies of every document in user-friendly platforms like Google Docs and Google Forms.
My store is called “Rigorous Resources” because all of the resources contain rigorous content that will motivate students to engage in thought-provoking and productive discussions. Thank you for choosing “Rigorous Resources”!!
Happy teaching!
