Research and Debate Egyptian Mummies:

As students learn about ancient civilizations it is a good time to tie in a debate activity. A big topic of debate in museums is the displaying of human remains. Students will take a side in this debate and research their side. They will then participate in a debate with the information they have learned.

This is an engaging activity and easy way to practice debate skills with a topic which doesn't generally cause high emotions in early teens. Students can learn to debate without emotions.

Easy prep for teachers as research sites are linked. The product also includes rubrics and follow up questions. Follow up questions increases rigor and helps students make connections.

Most of your students are probably already pretty familiar with how we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, and Valentine's Day in the United States. But have they ever heard of Fiesta de la Candelaria, Constitution Day, Día de Las Velitas, Carnaval, or dozens of other holidays celebrated throughout the Spanish-speaking world from December through February?

This flexible group project is a great way to expose your students to a wide variety of cultural traditions and practices in a short amount of time with minimal effort on your part!

Students will work in groups of 2-4 to research Winter holidays in a given Spanish-speaking country. Each member will focus on one holiday in their country, conduct research, and create a group slide presentation to teach the rest of the class what they have learned. I envisaged this to be a September week 1 internet activity. It will give students an opportunity to think about how other people perceive them. It could also be used as a lesson in how to search Google effectively or used as a dictionary / thesaurus activity, where students have to find descriptive words in order to search for appropriate pictures on Google Images.

These have been doing the rounds on FaceBook and email recently. You may have received posters / postcards entitled "Teachers...." or "Moms..." and then under the title are a series of photos with captions like;

Each caption is accompanied by an image of what that person thinks about the other person or group of people.

The sample here is of the "Teacher..." postcard. This is NOT what I am selling. I am selling a similar template entitled, "Students..." It is laid out the same as the teacher one with the same titles (the word teacher has been replaced with student), however, the pictures are missing. Students must search Google Images for appropriate pictures that characterize themselves. The photo titles are as follows;

Scrappy Patchwork Quilts

A scrappy quilt uses a variety of different fabrics that may or may not use a consistent theme. In this new version of cut and paste, students will make a scrappy quilt using a variety of pattern blocks included in the activity. The students must complete a set of questions or activities to know what numbered pattern to use and where it should be placed on their quilt. Each quilt has its own color scheme (color chart) and those are the colors students will need to create a one-of-a-kind scrappy quilt. Each quilt comes with a header, and some have additional activities students must complete to finish their quilts. Each quilt once assembled with header is 11x14 inches (does not include the size if a quilt has an additional activity).
