The Carbon Cycle and the Greenhouse Effect Articles for Reading Comprehension
By Science and STEAM Team
Do you want your students to understand the carbon cycle process and the greenhouse effect?
This resource contains two informational reading passages. One about the carbon cycle. It comes with a diagram that students can label after reading the passage to show their understanding. The second passage is about the greenhouse effect and has a short fill in the blank, so they can summarize their understanding.
The passages were written with middle schoolers in mind, but the information is very interesting and would be useful for other grades as well.

Students: What I Think I Do - Week 1 Internet Activity
By Mark Holmes
I envisaged this to be a September week 1 internet activity. It will give students an opportunity to think about how other people perceive them. It could also be used as a lesson in how to search Google effectively or used as a dictionary / thesaurus activity, where students have to find descriptive words in order to search for appropriate pictures on Google Images.
These have been doing the rounds on FaceBook and email recently. You may have received posters / postcards entitled "Teachers...." or "Moms..." and then under the title are a series of photos with captions like;
What my friends think I do
What my mother thinks I do
What I think I do
What I really do
Each caption is accompanied by an image of what that person thinks about the other person or group of people.
The sample here is of the "Teacher..." postcard. This is NOT what I am selling. I am selling a similar template entitled, "Students..." It is laid out the same as the teacher one with the same titles (the word teacher has been replaced with student), however, the pictures are missing. Students must search Google Images for appropriate pictures that characterize themselves. The photo titles are as follows;
Students...
What my friends think I do
What my mother thinks I do
What society thinks I do
What my teachers think I do
What I think I do
What I really do
My students printed off the images and then cut them out and pasted them on.
Enjoy!!!!

Students choose the landmarks they will research and then create a presentation using Google Earth to showcase their information along with pictures, videos and maps. Included with the lesson are student expectations, grading rubric and a tutorial for Google Earth (a free, Web 2.0 tool that does not require download). For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.
This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, or for a technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

State Research Project Alaska: Our Scrappy Patchwork Quilt
By The Emergency Sub
Alaska Research Project
Scrappy Patchwork Quilts
A scrappy quilt uses a variety of different fabrics that may or may not use a consistent theme. In this new version of cut and paste, students will make a scrappy quilt using a variety of pattern blocks included in the activity. The students must complete a set of questions or activities to know what numbered pattern to use and where it should be placed on their quilt. Each quilt has its own color scheme (color chart) and those are the colors students will need to create a one-of-a-kind scrappy quilt. Each quilt comes with a header, and some have additional activities students must complete to finish their quilts. Each quilt once assembled with header is 11x14 inches (does not include the size if a quilt has an additional activity).
Alaska State Scrappy Patchwork Quilt: Research Project
The Alaska State Scrappy Patchwork Quilt Research Project - a unique way to explore all that Alaska has to offer! This project is designed to engage students in a fun and interactive learning experience, allowing them to dive deep into the history, geography, and culture of the Last Frontier.
