How can you tell if a country is considered developed or developing? What are the characteristics or socioeconomic indicators of a country that you look at to determine if they are developed or developing?

This is a high-level thinking skill lesson that requires students to be actively involved in their learning experience. This lesson discusses what determines whether a country is developed or developing. Students will work in groups to create graphs depicting socioeconomic indicators--such as life expectancy, literacy rate, annual income, available technology, and medicine,--for various countries. Students will analyze the graphs to determine if each researched country is considered developed or developing and why. This not only encourages students to think outside the box but also reintegrates basic graph reading skills needed for state testing. Students are actively involved in every aspect of this lesson.

Learning about the Stock Market using Microsoft Excel lets middle schoolers see how an investment can grow and change, as well as the importance of thorough research. Utilizing Microsoft Excel, students “purchase” and track several stocks over a 6 week period. They have the opportunity to sell stocks or hold them, depending on the market research they do. Using a template they create in Microsoft Excel, they will track the increases and declines in their stock investments and see how much they can make their initial investment grow during the 6 weeks. This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2013. It is easily adaptable for different versions.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

POPULATION EXPLOSION!

Need a fun & engaging way to teach the causes & effects of population incline and decline, total birth rate and death rate, total population, Demographic Transition Model (DTM) Stages of Population Total Chart. This lesson can be modified to only 60 minutes if you are limited on time by omitting some of the activities, and it will still be effective. If you want to send home some of the activities such as the Cootie Catcher you can do that as well. This lesson gives you various options for activities. All can be included or you can choose which ones to implement. I always try to make learning fun and engaging while raising the bar to get students thinking through problem-solving.

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will understand the differences between birth rate and death rate

o The learner will be able to explain the cause & effect of overpopulation, high/low birth rate, and high/low death rate.

o The learner will be able to identify in what stage on the Demographic Transition Model (DMT) a county lies and why.

o The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of what problems and opportunities may occur with an incline and a decline in population.

MATERIALS:

• Student Reading Comprehension Activity (3 Pages), a timer, a die (Suggested to laminate this for durability and reuse.
• Cootie Catcher Comprehension and Review (1 Per Student)
• Student Reading Comprehension Activity: Demographic Transition Model (1 page), Colored Pencils,
• Group Research Activity (1 per group), internet access
• Student Review Game, Cut Out & Laminate Pieces and Place in a Zip Lock Bag (1 Set Per Group)
• 3 Canning Jars and Rice, or something small to represent people.
• Laminate the Population Symbol Card, One Per Group.
• Document cameras, dedicated computer projection systems ar interactive whiteboards for each student to display their “Take a Look at Population” Group Research Activity. They will display for the class to see.

PREPARATION:

You may include all or omit a few activities based on the time available for this lesson. You may also split the reading assignment & activities into two class periods, if necessary.

• Laminate the Reading Comprehension Activity (3 pages). 1 Set Per Group.
• Laminate the Game Cards and place them in Ziplock bags, 1 Set Per Group
• Print Cootie Catchers, One Per Student
• Print Demographic Transition Model, One Per Group
• Take a Look at Population, One Per Group
• Using the Jars: Label Each Jar (1) the United States or Your Country (2) World (3) China. Fill the “World” jar to the very top representing 100% of the world’s population and place the lid on it. Fill the “United States” jar

In order to understand this, students need to take a deep look into the history of the struggle Ukraine has had with its more powerful neighbors in its attempts to become independent. Finally, in 1991, Ukraine was free of domination and created its own government system, and claimed independence for the first time in history. In an attempt to reach independence, there has been a great amount of bloodshed over the centuries.

Get students involved in the learning process through this lesson China's Historical One Child Policy: Creating a Population Density Cartogram. Students will not only learn about the cause and effect of China's One Child Policy of 1979, but will strengthen their knowledge of map creation and reading skills, specific to a cartogram.

Working in collaborative groups, team members will participate in a group reading activity an article on China’s 1979 One-Child Policy Act entitled Too Many In The Family. This article will address the history behind the law, the policy incentives, disobeying the policy, and expectations of the rule. Students to express their thoughts on the topic after the reading and use high-level thinking skills.

In addition, students will have fun collaborating, examining and learning how to read cartograms by creating their own cartogram that reflects the current population of China. This brings the past into the present. Students will need graph paper, colored pencils, a map, and a calculator for this activity.

While this lesson focuses on the original One-Child Policy Act of 1979, there have been additional child policy acts passed since 1979 — the first one being the 2015 Two-Child Policy Act, following the 2021 Three-Child Policy Act. This lesson will have students explore the two systems of ‘Capitalism’ and ‘Socialism’. Students will go beyond the surface level of understanding, and will be prompted to apply their knowledge of these two economic systems to a distant, isolated culture called ‘Ladakh’, who have been dramatically transformed by “development” or capitalism. Students will analyze a documentary film and identify examples of each economic system. Two critical thinking activities are included that will serve to demonstrate their new understandings and have students delve deeper into the economic & political dynamics shown in the film. 1) 'Loop/Web Diagram'- Students will show how the road coming into Ladakh has changed their culture and environment. 2) Debate- In this extension activity students will be assigned one of five perspectives; all of which were presented in the documentary. This activity will prompt students to rethink any assumptions and understandings they may have had tied to the concepts of progress, development, wealth and poverty. An engaging way to begin a unit on economics! This fun and hands-on activity will have students explore the important concepts of human needs versus wants through an engaging rocket ship simulation. Students will be vicariously drawn into an emergency situation in which they must collaborate, and agree as to what items they consider as ‘essential’ for their survival on their rocket ship mission to live on a far away planet. An interactive Slide Presentation will help guide the groups on their journey… along with prompting students to delve deeper by examining the broader issues of sustainability, waste, and identifying the main differences between ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ countries.

This lesson involves having students examine the impacts of the Industrial Era in the United States with a specific focus on child labor. It is recommended that students will have explored, to some degree, the Industrial era prior to this lesson. This resource will prompt students to analyze social activist Lewis Hines' photographs that depict the various jobs and working conditions that children experienced. The Slide Presentation is interactive, problem posing, and vicariously draws the students into the lives of the children of the Industrial era.

Optional Extension Activity: Students compare and contrast the child labor of the Industrial era with the child labor that exists today. A 22 minute documentary film titled 'Zoned for Slavery: The Child Behind the Label' supplements this lesson.
