The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Looking for an exciting way to teach your students about soils and weathering? This Aztec, Inca & Maya Escape Room is the perfect blend of social studies content, close reading, and gamified learning! In this activity, students will explore all three of the civilizations through an engaging close reading article and four unique challenges.

Overview of the Activity: Students begin by reading a two-page informational passage that explains different aspects of each of the civilizations, (where they were located, when they flourished, achievements, etc.). The article includes essential vocabulary like terrace farming, irrigation, chinampas, aqueducts, astronomy and hieroglyphics, providing a solid foundation for students before they tackle the four interactive challenges.

Each challenge targets a different skill:

• Challenge 1: Matching vocabulary terms to their definitions (reinforcing social studies concepts).
• Challenge 2: True/false questions based on key facts from the reading (to build comprehension).
• Challenge 3: Multiple-choice questions (testing understanding of key concepts about the various civilizations).
• Challenge 4: Identifying the paragraph where certain information is found (developing close reading skills).

For each correct answer, students receive a clue—a one-digit number. After completing all four challenges, students use their numbers to solve a final puzzle and “escape” the room.

History of La Piñata Digital Reading and Decoder

Students read a passage and answer comprehension questions. Based on the answers they are able to decode a secret message!

Also includes a printable reading of the History of the Piñata with a Compare and Contrast worksheet.

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that analyzes the Roman Empire's expansion, government and legacies left for the modern world which is studied in the 6th grade curriculum under the following standards:

• 6.5 As complex societies and civilizations change over time, their political and economic structures evolve. A golden age may be indicated when there is an extended period of time that is peaceful, prosperous, and demonstrates great cultural achievements.
• 6.5a Geographic factors influence the development of classical civilizations and their political structures.
• 6.5b Political structures were developed to establish order, to create and enforce laws, and to enable decision making.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to conquer nearby territories to expand the Roman Empire's control and defend Roman from invasions by their enemies; failure will result in the downfall of Rome. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #6. This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

Need a creative way to introduce South America to your students? Tired of the same old intro procedures? Here is a great way to not only introduce South America to students but encourage the use of map skills such as a compass rose, map scale, etc.

Students will explore South America by taking a trip through South America visiting 5 main cities and major landforms along the way. Students will exhibit the ability to identify regions as well as South American exports. This takes learning to a whole new level with higher-level thinking skills.

Take your students on the experience of a lifetime. Give them autonomy within their learning experience and encourage them to explore!

This lesson can be modified by the instruction to meet a wide range of learning abilities.

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the Inca, Mayan & Aztec civilizations which is studied in the 5th grade curriculum under the following standards:

• 5.1 The first humans in the Western Hemisphere modified their physical environment as well as adapted to their environment. Their interactions with their environment led to various innovations and to the development of unique cultures.
• 5.1a Various forms of scientific evidence suggest that humans came to North America approximately 25,000 to 14,000 years ago and spread southward to South America.
• 5.1b Human populations that settled along rivers, in rainforests, along oceans, in deserts, on plains, in mountains, and in cold climates adapted to and made use of the resources and environment around them in developing distinct ways of life.
• 5.1c Early peoples living together in settlements developed shared cultures with customs, beliefs, values, and languages that give identity to the group. These early peoples also developed patterns of organization and governance to manage their societies.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to collect ancient treasures lost in these civilizations. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have found and collected the treasures!

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

This Julius Caesar activity will make learning fun with this engaging, hands-on task card escape room. This activity includes 16 task cards that are broken down into 4 levels or puzzle types, giving students a chance to practice nonfiction reading comprehension skills while actively decoding puzzles.

Lead your students to discover information about Julius Caesar by exploring it on their own before teaching or have them use it to review information. Students will answer questions that can be found directly in their reading passage, so there is no prior knowledge needed.

Government legislative structure can be hard to understand and grasp, especially when you are discussing types of government systems around the world. Who makes the laws and who approves the laws? Who is the head of government? What is a unicameral versus a bicameral legislation? This printable graphic show students examples of head of state and head of government such as monarchs, presidents, prime ministers, and chancellors. The bottom explains what the difference is between a unicameral and bicameral legislative body and gives examples of what these law-making bodies may be called around the world, such as Senate, House, Parliament, National Assembly, etc. It is important to understand that a Prime Minister in one country may not have the same roles as a Prime Minister in another country, same as a Monarch may be an absolute Monarch may be Head of Government and Head of State, where as in a country such as England which has a constitutional monarchy, the role of the monarch is only ceremonial.

This graphic is designed to bring clarity to various positions a government can have. When students read that a government has a unicameral legislation, they will understand that it only has one body such as a Parliament that makes and passes laws.

Students must understand that every government within each country may have similarities but is usually structured differently.

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that analyzes ancient China's government and the role that geography played on it, the Qin & Han Dynasty's, as well as the advancements that China has in regard to science and technology which is studied in the 6th grade curriculum under the following standards:

• 6.5 As complex societies and civilizations change over time, their political and economic structures evolve. A golden age may be indicated when there is an extended period of time that is peaceful, prosperous, and demonstrates great cultural achievements.
• 6.5a Geographic factors influence the development of classical civilizations and their political structures.
• 6.5b Political structures were developed to establish order, to create and enforce laws, and to enable decision making.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, act as an emperor in ancient China by completing tasks to govern the country, maintain unity and defend from northern invaders such as the Mongols; failure will result in the downfall of China. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #6. This lesson gives a great overview of the South America's physical, economic, cultural and political characteristics. Students will create a class top ten list of What I Want to Know About South America and will explore the four aspects of South America. To add some fun, the students can use an Cootie Catcher review game with instructor developed questions or they have the option to create their own Cootie Catcher game —instructor's desecration.
