Through this engaging Africa Travel Story geography lesson, your students will love exploring Africa through stations, or set up like a carousel activity! (Note: Although this is designed for two weeks (45-minute classes, it can be modified at the teacher's discretion if there is a time limit. Simply require students to complete 5 countries rather than 10. Typically each group will study one country a day unless you have longer class times such as in block classes.)

OBJECTIVES:

The learner will identify and give examples of governments with rule by one, few, or many in Africa.
(2) The learner will identify the location of renewable and non-renewable natural resources such as freshwater, fossil fuels, fertile soils, and timber.
(3) The learner will identify the physical characteristics of a place such as landforms, bodies of water, natural resources, and weather.
(4) The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the patterns and characteristics.
(5) The learner will compare similarities and differences among people such as music, clothing, and food.
(6) The learner will describe a variety of regions such as landforms, climate, and vegetation regions.
(7) The learner will describe elements of culture, including language, religion, beliefs and customs, institutions, and technologies.

MATERIALS:

Center printouts (10) placed into folders, 1 country sheet per student (30 students = 30 Ethiopia Sheets)
10 pocket folders (Place the student country sheets in the left pockets)
3 Prong Folder Per Student (They will add their country pages to their notebook)
Atlases, books, magazines, articles, and internet access for each country station.
Map of Europe, one per student
Exit Cards

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages. IMPORTANT: Give students the option to choose not to participate in this lesson if they are anyway connected to the event. Let them know in advance earlier in the week prior to the day of the lesson and allow them to come to you in confidentiality if they wish not to participate. Make another arrangement for that student for the one class period.

This is a factual lesson and does not ask students to imagine or place themselves in others' shoes, yet if a child had a family member or experienced the event his/herself, you may not want to subject them to ANY lesson on this topic. This lesson gives a timeline of events and facts about the event.

ALSO NOTE: The closing activity incorporates a song by the Beastie Boys: "Listen, All You New Yorkers" which was written after 9/11 as a Love Letter to New York. (Look it up on Youtube) Depending on your classroom/school culture, you may or may not choose to use this. This is not mandatory for the lesson, but song and music is a good way to engage students. In saying this, the lyrics included in the lesson have been rewritten to take out questionable wording/content. i.e. LSD, Porno, Hell. These words have been replaced with other words. However, the words cannot be taken out of the Youtube video or song. The lyrics can be used without the video or song, but will not be as effective. IMPORTANT: YOU WILL WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG PRIOR TO PURCHASE as this song may not be appropriate for all students/classes/schools. You as the educator are responsible for gaging what is appropriate for your students and are responsible for what is presented to them.

THIS LESSON CAN BE USED WITHOUT THE SONG as it is the closing activity.

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will become familiar with the events that lead to the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York

o The learner will work in a cooperative group to read about the attack on the World Trade Center outlines in a timeline of the events of the day.

o 10 Facts Cards for the Introduction (Included & Optional

o The learner will understand the impact of this event on the life of an individual through discussion.

o Index cards for questions.

o The learner will listen or watch and then examine the lyrics to the song: A letter to New York: Listen, All You New Yorkers by the Beastie Boys, 2004.

MATERIALS:

o Student group reading assignment included.

o Copy of Lyrics to Listen, All You New Yorkers (included) Rewritten into a cleaner version to replace words like: hell, LSD, Porno, etc.

o Suggested YouTube video for viewing (or) YouTube or Spotify audio version.

Tube; it should easily be located. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way around this issue. Please watch and use your discernment

Is the United States a true democracy or a true republic or a mixture of both? This is a conceptual thinking lesson on government types and systems implemented to encourage students to develop their higher-level thinking skill sets. Students will gain an understanding of the similarities and differences between a Republic and a Democracy by working in cooperative groups to complete a comparison T-Chart. Based on their findings they will be asked to determine if the United States is a true democracy or a true republic. This can be challenging for students who have yet to develop high-level thinking strategies, but we as teachers must help them develop these skills by giving them opportunities to do so. The student will need to back up their decision with reason. It is suggested that teachers participate in students' learning process by rotating from group to group to check for understanding and provide assistance and redirection. This was used in a 7th-grade public school system but can be used at high-grade levels with success.

Conceptual teaching is based on taking a concept and going beyond the basic facts to develop a true understanding. Conceptual thinking may be challenging for some students; therefore, as the instructor you may need to provide individual guidance, whether students are working individually or in teams. Learners will strengthen their conceptual thinking skills the more they are encouraged to use these skills. With this lesson, I suggest students work in teams so they can learn from one another.

Need a creative way for your students to connect, understand, retain information, and have FUN learning about a country's people, culture, landforms, strengths, weaknesses, history, future, etc.? This is the lesson for you. It is highly flexible and can be used from grades 6th through 12th, as well as in higher education. I encourage you to modify the lesson to meet the needs of your students.

This lesson can be used if you are specifically studying one country as a class or if you are focusing on a continent. If a continent, you may allow students to choose the country they would like to study.

A PowerPoint is included to assist in the instruction of using anatomy to study and discuss a country. Example: Eyes: what can be seen in the country? (Landforms, landmarks, scenery, etc.) Nose: What would scents one might smell? (Food, pollution, flowers, trees, water, conversations, language, etc.)

Ultimately, this knowledge can empower students to advocate for positive change and promote greater inclusivity and equality in their own communities. So, the next time you open a textbook or watch a documentary about Asia, pay close attention to how women are portrayed. It’s not just about empowerment; it’s about understanding the intricate tapestry of humanity!

OBJECTIVE:

The learner will study and examine the ancient roles of women in Asia.
The learner will study and examine themodern-day roles of women in Asia.
The learner will translate the poem Fu Xuan Women.
The learner will write a letter to a woman in Asia exploring and expressing his/her feelings regarding the roles and status of women within the country.
The learner will predict the future roles of women in Asia.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Bell
Sticky Notes
Instructions to the Matchmaker game
Wrap-up Activity reproducible
Notecards for two-minute assignment

PREPARATION:

Laminate four copies each of the reading materials on China, India, North/South Korea, Japan and Vietnam. This may seem like a great deal of work, but it will save you preparation time in the coming years. The room will have been set up in ten centers, placing an article for each center. Since there are only five countries, you will have two centers per country.
Place a stack of note cards at each table.
One lunch bag per table.
Bell to ring to signal to move to the next center
Place sticky notes at each table.
Make copies of the Wrap-Up Activity sheets for each country

INTRODUCTION:

Find out what each group knows about women in Asia before you begin this lesson. Divide them into teams of four and present the topic. Give each team a stack of sticky notes. Ask them to brainstorm and list as many ideas or questions as they can come up within five minutes.

Here’s the kicker—(More with purchase)

WARM-UP (GROUP READING ACTIVITY)

The room has been set up into 10 centers: 2 centers for each country being studied. The goal is for each student to visit all five countries, but not to visit all ten centers since some are duplicates. The centers will be timed giving students 10 minutes to complete the reading and

2-minute assignment.

Explain to students that they will be visiting six different countries: Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, Vietnam, and India to learn the roles of women (and men) in each country and how they have improved. (Note: North and South Korea have been combined into one learning center.)

They will be given 8 minutes to read their activity and 2 minutes to complete the center activity. Once eight minutes have passed, the instructor will notify the class by ringing a bell or using another sound. The remaining two minutes will be used to complete the 2-minute activity (see below).

THE 2-MINUTE ASSIGNMENTS:

Once the warm-up reading center’s activity is complete, the instructor will pick up the bags and will dump them all into one bag and shake them up.

MATCH MAKER GAME:

Explain to students, matchmaking is a process of making a match of an unmarried man and woman by a matchmaker, which is a common way of choosing a spouse in ancient China and other Asian cultures. The traditional Chinese wedding is much involved with "matchmaker", or in other words, marriage introducer. In Zhou Dynasty several thousand years ago, the post of "official matchmaker" was set up for management of marriage, supervising and urging young people old enough to marry or widows and widowers to marry. Later, the meaning of "matchmaker" extended to all persons or events that act as a go-between of marriage between two families.

Today matchmaking is still seen as the proper way to marry by the older generation. You will find that parents will trade a person’s resume and will compare it to their child’s to determine if it is a good match. However, there has been given more freedom, from one generation to another, of individual choice to choose a partner.

Tell students they are going to play a game called “Matchmaker”.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY INCLUDED

Examine the Fu Xuan Woman Poem by Arthur Waley in how it relates to the role of women in Asia. Have students work in groups of two to read and examine the poem Fu Xuan Woman. Provide each student with a Question for Thought Activity Sheet (Included). Give students15 minutes to read and examine the poem, also attempting to answer the Questions for Thought.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (30 Minutes)

Provide each student with wrap-up activity sheet of a female from one of the countries studied. They are to write a letter to the female expressing his/her feelings and thoughts regarding the roles and status of women in that country, as well as celebrating how the roles and status of women within the country has improved. In addition, have each student express how he/she feels women’s roles will change in the future. Allow for follow-up discussion.

Challenging your students doesn't mean it can't be fun, creative, and group collaboration. This is a Geography Asia research or wrap-up assignment that can be used throughout the study of Asia (or modified to fit another topic) in geography, world history, and other social studies classes. I have used this in my class for 7 years and it has been a very successful learning tool. This can easily be modified the assignment to fit various topics. Students and parents love this assignment because it is fun and reflects what students have learned. Students are proud of their work when they finish. The idea of the lesson can be changed to fit studies within other core subjects, such as science. This is a supplemental activity that will enhance students learning within the unit study. The teacher-ready supplemental activities included in this lesson are focused on an Asia Unit.
