SEL Project: Students Create a Lesson

This project encourages students to choose an SEL topic of their own interest and create a presentation and activity as if they were delivering a lesson on it.
This project allows students to take the format of SEL lessons they've learned from and practice using it themselves to find, understand, and share information. This benefits individual students, as they can explore information of interest, and allows the educator to gauge what topics their students are curious about for future lessons.
If you have students present their lessons they also get practice talking about SEL topics and respectfully listening to peers do the same. I find this to be a great end of year project to wrap up SEL learning.
With presentations this project can be made to take up a whole week of SEL instruction (based on a 30-45 minute period a day). Day 1 students can hand in their topic and activity idea for teacher feedback, days 2-3 students can create the material, and day 4-5 students can present. Examples are simple for clarity and to suit a range of students, but expectations can be adjusted based on grade-level. This project includes a packet with clear instructions (with examples) and space for students to write their chosen topic and activity, an example slideshow, and two example activities that accompany the slideshow.
Creative Design Projects - 8 Projects for Fashion, Interior & Graphic Design

Eight different lessons to create high interest projects in the areas of Fashion Design, Interior Design and Graphic Design give students a choice of which activity they would enjoy. Or, if you prefer, you can choose one or two to assign to your class. Each lesson gives an option that students can do on the computer or without any technology at all.
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

Interior Design: Design Your Dream House - Career Simulation | Distance Learning

Computer Hardware & Software - Build a Computer | Distance Learning

Teach the basics of computer hardware and software while letting students explore what's inside the computer! This unit helps students explore and understand the basic components inside the computer. This is perfect for any technology class in upper elementary or middle school. All files provided are fully editable, allowing teachers to make modifications for differentiation or personalization if they choose.
A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (fully editable) is included to introduce the topic to the class and can be used as a whole class presentation or provided to students to explore on their own. The first part of the assignment involves students identifying and defining the parts of the computer, using either MS PowerPoint or Google Slides to create a presentation. Next, students research specific computer hardware components and “build” two different computers, using either MS Excel or Google Sheets, and remaining within a given budget. A template in Excel that can also be opened in Sheets is provided. Teacher and student resources are included with instructions, sites for research and lesson extension ideas. A basic grading rubric for each project, is also included.
The projects can be completed individually, or students can work in pairs. These projects were created for grades 7-8 but could also be used with upper elementary students.

History of Video Games - Research & Presentation Project | Distance Learning

What student doesn't love games – especially video games! In this lesson, students learn more about the origin and history of video games. Students choose a time period in history from a provided list, research that era, and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a video using Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Adobe Spark, eMaze, Canva, etc. (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.
This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, career exploration class, Principles of Arts, A/V Technology & Communications class, or any technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well.

Technology Then & Now: A Team History / Research Project

In this lesson, students use critical thinking and research skills to determine how a specific form of technology evolved. Working with a partner or small group, students start with where their chosen technology was prior to 1900 and then take it through 5 more steps of evolution to the present day. Students use the Internet for research to determine what had to happen between each step to move their technology to the next iteration. Worksheets are provided for six high interest topics, with an editable blank form (PowerPoint) if the teacher chooses to add another topic (or let students choose a different topic). The worksheets are two pages (print front and back). Resources for the teacher and students include a short list of Internet sites as a starting point for each research topic. A sample completed worksheet is also included for one topic. Topics included are:

"Rube Goldberg" Simple Machines WebQuest & Construction Project

Learning about Simple Machines with a "Rube Goldberg" construction project gives students an opportunity to research information and then apply that knowledge to a hands-on project they design and build with their team.
First, students complete a short WebQuest / Internet Scavenger Hunt to learn (or reinforce) the basics of simple machines. Then, with their team, they design and build a project that utilizes that knowledge from recycled materials. The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for upper elementary students as well.

Setting Goals with a Vision Board - Canva, PowerPoint or Google Slides Project

This unit gives students a new way to plan goals and create a visual representation of them as they create a vision board using the free Web 2.0 tool Canva (www.canva.com), Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides. Canva does not require download, making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning. Options for using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides are also included for use if the teacher prefers.
In these lessons, students are provided with a quick tutorial for Canva, as well as links to other resources to help them with their designs. The tutorial is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. Links are included to tutorials for Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides.
Students start this unit by learning about vision boards and looking at some examples before planning their own. Next, they search for non-copyrighted pictures, quotes and words to convey their goals and create a vision board using Canva (PowerPoint or Slides). Teacher and student resources are provided for the lesson, along with full instructions and project expectation, including a grading rubric. Three versions of the assignment are included: One that includes all software choices, one that includes only Canva, and one that includes only the Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides options. A sample vision board is also included, as well as links to other examples. Links for tutorials are provided for all suggested software choices in the student resources and a Quick Start Tutorial Guide is included for Canva. All student resources are fully editable, so that it can be easily modified for any classroom.
If you prefer, this lesson can be done without access to student computers, using poster board and pictures cut from magazines (see full supply list for this option below). A version of those instructions is also included.
Perfect for the beginning of the school year or the New Year to set goals, this lesson can be used in technology, AVID, leadership or similar classes. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in any secondary classroom.

"Junkbox Wars" Marble Maze Project - Engineering Design Process

This STEM project encourages teamwork as students utilize the Engineering Design Process to design, build, test and re-engineer a marble maze created with limited materials. Each group is given a box or bag with the same materials and each team has the same time to design the best possible maze that will allow a standard marble to make the longest possible run.
Students use the first day to choose teams, understand the project expectations, and complete the Engineering Process Design Worksheet. The next three days, they are building the maze. Finally, on the fifth day of the project, each team competes to see which maze wins!

Design & Create a Board Game | Distance Learning

What middle schooler isn't excited by playing games as a part of their lesson? This activity takes their love of games to a new level as they work with a team to create a new board game, test them for "fun appeal" by playing and critiquing others' games and then making the necessary modifications to complete an awesome final product.
Created for middle schoolers, this project based learning lesson is a great addition to technology classes that teach programming, phone app creation and other game design as a way for students to really focus on what makes a game addictive.
Lesson includes teacher resources, including web links, design ideas and guides, student expectations and rubric, and student worksheets. This lesson can be completed entirely OFF computers, without computer access for students, making it great for those days you have to give up your technology lab for standardized testing.
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.
