Beyond the primary grades teachers often seem to forget about checking students reading fluency. This is a simple to use form for students to provide themselves a self-feedback on their read aloud fluency. Teachers can then use the same form to provide their own feedback on the students reading fluency. File states to use Audacity (a free download online) but other recording programs/devices may be used - this is just a personal choice/what is available on our school computers. This file contains directions and a planning sheet for a story map the students will create for chapter 6, specifically pages 90-95, of The Outsiders. The purpose of the story map is for the kids to choose the 6 most important events that they will summarize on their visualization story map in 6 panels. During their final year of middle school, 8th graders engage in preparing for high school by refining and enhancing skills acquired in previous middle school years, while also acquiring new (and frequently more challenging) abilities.

In numerous ways, 8th grade serves as a transitional year since students are anticipated to have mastered middle school skills and start evolving into “high-schoolers.” In particular, 8th graders are anticipated to be self-sufficient thinkers and doers, evaluating and articulating what they understand in both their written and spoken communication.

In the 8th grade, students further develop various skills acquired in previous grades, particularly focusing on aspects such as text evidence, language, and comparisons across different genres of text. Nonetheless, 8th graders deepen their text analyses by exploring the details and writing structures while evaluating how these aspects influence the text.

This ebook contains an in-depth guided reading lesson plan complete with activities, which takes around 90 minutes to complete. Proposed responses are also included.

This file contains directions on how to write a found poem, and requires students to write one for a book they are reading independently. The students will choose a passage in their novel that they'd like to summarize using a found poem, then they identify words and phrases from the text that they'll incorporate.It includes the directions, a writer's checklist, a reflection for the students to complete after their poem, and a question at the end that requires them to switch poems with a partner where they have to summarize the section of text their partner wrote about. If they can, their partner's poem was successful in summarizing the text! If not, their partner should go back and revise.
