Beyond the primary grades teachers often seem to forget about checking students reading fluency. This is a simple to use form for students to provide themselves a self-feedback on their read aloud fluency. Teachers can then use the same form to provide their own feedback on the students reading fluency. This is an independent reading preparedness and preparation rubric I use to make sure students come to class prepared to read, and stay focused and respectful to their peers while reading in class. It is a 4 point rubric, and focuses on preparedness and performance. Students use it to self-assess their own reading habits, and set a goal to work towards at the bottom. Then I go in and score them with a different color pen on the rubric, so they can see where they believe they are, and where I believe they are on the rubric.

This product is a quiz with questions from chapters 1-3. I use it as a reading check to make sure my students are keeping up and understanding the text. There is a sequencing events section, a characterization matching section, and a true/ false plot section. There are 25 questions in total. I've formatted the quiz so it is on a half sheet of paper, with the first two sections on the front and the third on the back, so you will have to make double- sided copies and then cut them in half. Answers are included! Thank you so much.

This is a quick quiz for chapters 6-7. It gives the students a quote and asks them to identify the speaker. Some names are used multiple times, while some aren't used at all. I have included an answer key and the page the quotes can be found on for your reference.

This resource should accompany Meg Medina's short story Sol Painting, Inc. This short story can be found in the book Flying Lessons and Other Stories, which is an amazing compilation of short stories by diverse authors about diverse characters. This resource includes a 12 page presentation and 6 student worksheets. The worksheets and presentation include a pre-reading journal entry, a focus on theme and central idea (which I teach as two separate things), vocabulary using context clues, tiered reading questions, and post-reading questions regarding the story's themes and central idea. The worksheets come in a colored version for posting online and a b/w version for printing.

This resource defines theme as the message, lesson, or moral of the story. Central idea is defined as what the story is all about- a single sentence which unifies all elements of the story.

This resource should be use with the short story How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium by Matt De La Peña. This is the first short story in the book Flying Lessons and Other Stories. This resource includes a presentation with 11 slides which you can display to students. It also includes a colored and b/w version of 4 pages of student worksheets. The first page focuses on point of view, the second on vocabulary, the third on tiered reading response questions, and the fourth on a focus standard- RL.8.3. The presentation contains an answer key.

This activity should accompany Ellen Raskin's book The Westing Game. Check your students' reading comprehension by assigning them one of 16 character cards. Students will ask each other questions in order to determine the character card that five of their classmates have. Students will have to know the characters in the book in order to ask and answer useful questions. This activity allows students to get up and moving! The resource includes a worksheet for students to complete as they ask questions along with a reflection once the activity is complete. There is a slide presentation with instructions and 16 character cards to print, cut, and hand out to students.
