This is a simple to use for that allows students to provide themselves feedback on their reading (using a specific strategy). The form also provides space for a peer and teacher feedback, as well as a place for the student to set a goal for next time.

Beyond the primary grades teachers often seem to forget about checking students reading fluency. This is a simple to use form for students to provide themselves a self-feedback on their read aloud fluency. Teachers can then use the same form to provide their own feedback on the students reading fluency. File states to use Audacity (a free download online) but other recording programs/devices may be used - this is just a personal choice/what is available on our school computers. Ten four-leaf clovers with St. Patrick's Day vocabulary for individual, small or whole group creative writings. This is an independent reading preparedness and preparation rubric I use to make sure students come to class prepared to read, and stay focused and respectful to their peers while reading in class. It is a 4 point rubric, and focuses on preparedness and performance. Students use it to self-assess their own reading habits, and set a goal to work towards at the bottom. Then I go in and score them with a different color pen on the rubric, so they can see where they believe they are, and where I believe they are on the rubric.

This activity should accompany Ellen Raskin's book The Westing Game. Check your students' reading comprehension by assigning them one of 16 character cards. Students will ask each other questions in order to determine the character card that five of their classmates have. Students will have to know the characters in the book in order to ask and answer useful questions. This activity allows students to get up and moving! The resource includes a worksheet for students to complete as they ask questions along with a reflection once the activity is complete. There is a slide presentation with instructions and 16 character cards to print, cut, and hand out to students.

This resource should be use with the short story How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium by Matt De La Peña. This is the first short story in the book Flying Lessons and Other Stories. This resource includes a presentation with 11 slides which you can display to students. It also includes a colored and b/w version of 4 pages of student worksheets. The first page focuses on point of view, the second on vocabulary, the third on tiered reading response questions, and the fourth on a focus standard- RL.8.3. The presentation contains an answer key.
