It's the end of a unit or the day before vacation.... what would be FUN and motivating to students?  Learning slang!  This Youtube video and accompanying Google Doc and Edpuzzle  viewing guides will help students sound more natural with their speech.  This video teaches slang from PUERTO RICO, but check out my other products for slang from other countries!

Students can view the video and write down answers in open-ended form, or they can watch the video in an EdPuzzle and answer the multiple choice questions.  (Auto-graded, by the way!)  The questions in this activity are written in Spanish, but the language level is basic and should be accessible to students from Novice High and up.  The video itself presents Spanish slang terms with explanations in English.

**Disclaimer: There is one expression in the video that is not so nice... "Come mierda" which they present to mean that someone is a snob. **I cut it out of the Edpuzzle, but I cannot edit the YouTube video.****

A great movie to hook students and teach about culture.

Is there a Fall Feel in the air?  These Spanish fall activities will get your students talking, writing and listening about otoño, Halloween and Día de los muertos in an engaging way.  Practice both presentational and interpersonal speaking and writing while keeping students producing lots of Spanish! Give them comprehensible input with comprehension questions that are either open-ended or self-correcting MCQ!

Use these resources in all of your levels!  They’re already differentiated!  Those days when you’re just exhausted, progress reports were due, you were correcting benchmarks, when you need sub plans.... Want your Spanish students to learn about Day of the Dead , but  reading comprehension is getting boring in your Spanish class?  Turn it into a game!  This mystery-solving reading about Día de Muertos  goes from dull to exciting as students work together and move around the room to solve a mystery!  This is a simple “print and go” with no work for the teacher!  Use the same lesson plan for all of your classes, regardless of level, because your differentiation is already done!

   Students investigate with Maria, a young person from Mexico, while she tries to understand more about a former member of her town.  He visits the townspeople all year, not just during Día de Muertos.  Why can’t he rest in peace?   While they read the parts, they are also looking for “code words”.  Students record the code words on a special answer sheet that will eventually lead them to solving the mystery of how/why he died.   It’s so much fun! 

    After, you can decide which of the 4 follow-up activities you want to do with your students.  There are 4; a True or False Activity to check for basic comprehension, a graphic organizer for students to learn more about the specific items related to Day of the Dead, a “tell me in your own words” activity,  and a writing follow up where students use their reading comprehension and critical thinking to invent an explanation for who this lost soul was and why he died the way he did.  Answer key to the True/False is also included.  Best of all?  If there’s something you’d like to change for your students, you are free to edit!

The reading cards are written in English for your Novice classes, and Spanish for Intermediate classes.  The questions are written for Novice in English and answers will be in English as well. And for Intermediate, the questions and answers will be in Spanish.  The same for the instructions and mission!  Students get the benefit of learning about a cultural event while using teamwork!
