(ENG) DANGEROUS WINTER SPORTS - READING COMPREHENSION
By French Made Fun!
This is the English version. Looking for the French version? It's right here!
This 16-page resource will provide you with 4 separate texts, each about a dangerous winter sport :
Each text is two full pages and each is accompanied by 4 in-depth questions as well as an answer key.
These texts can be used to model reading or writing skills, for informative and descriptive writing, or to use during a guided reading or shared reading with your students. They could be used as an assessment of comprehension. They could easily be assigned to a substitute teacher. I love using these readings around Canada Games, Winter Games or Olympics.
As with all of my documents, I cater to a strictly middle-school crowd, and you'll not find frilly, kiddish or immature content (vocabulary, fonts, structure or images). These would be suitable for your students in grades 5-7 (even 4th or 8th), depending on needs and interests.

Winter Themed Collaborative Writing Activity
By Language Arts Excellence
Celebrate winter with this engaging communal story-telling activity!
This product features a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique winter-themed photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.
With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is perfect for a Friday, a substitute plan, or simply for when students need a creative break without sacrificing learning and hard work. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!
Product Includes:
- 30 unique "Collaborative Story Time" worksheets with winter-themed photographs (2-sided)
- 1 blank worksheet so that you may include your own picture or photograph

I personally like to begin each class during the month of December with a prompt to really get students in the spirit of Christmas. ⭐ Meaning of Christmas Lesson Plan:
This product features an engaging "Christmas Talk" activity that will have your students thinking, writing, collaborating, speaking, and moving around in one class period! In this activity, they must choose between 5 different quotes from famous figures about Christmas and articulate why the quote aligns with their own perspective about the holiday. I use this lesson every year during the week leading up to Christmas vacation to make sure that my students take some time out of their hectic lives to consider what Christmas truly means not to society, not to others, but to them.
⭐ Christmas Collaborative Writing Activity:
"Christmas Collaborative Story Time" is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique Christmas picture or photograph. ⭐ The Little Match Girl Sensory Details Lesson Plan:
This product features 3 engaging, differentiated activities that focus on the rich sensory details of Hans Christian Andersen's devastatingly beautiful fairytale, "The Little Match Girl." The activities span before, during, and after reading the story with the intent to not only identify the sensory details, but to analyze their importance and how they add to the reader's experience with the tale and the little match girl herself. The activities support multiple learning styles so that all students walk away from the story with an appreciation for this heartbreaking tale and empathy for those less fortunate during the holiday season.
⭐ Christmas Quote Posters from Literature - newly added!
Make your classroom pop this Christmas season with this set of 25 beautifully-made posters featuring Christmas quotes from literature. Each 7.5 x 7.5 (square) PDF poster contains a noteworthy quote imposed over a stunning photograph that will spruce up your ELA classroom during the month of December. The square format makes for an eye-catching arrangement on your wall or bulletin board. I suggest laminating the posters so that you may use them year after year!
⭐ BONUS: Christmas Figurative Language Practice (included for free):
This resource features an engaging, Christmas themed worksheet to help students practice identifying figurative language. This can be given at the start of class, end of class, for homework, as part of an emergency substitute plan, or as part of a stations activity.
