Solve WORD PROBLEMS involving AREA AND CIRCUMFERENCE OF CIRCLES with this engaging, independent Pi Day math activity! 7th Grade CCSS.7.G.B.4

Directions for Use:

*Students will be given the Word Problem page along with the Pi Symbol Page. These may be printed front to back if you choose.

*Students will answer the first question on their Word Problem page. This will lead them to one of the dots on their Pi Symbol page. They will make a straight line from the dot next to the answer for #1 to the dot that is next the answer to #2 (then from #2 to #3). They will start a new sequence of lines for each set.

*I recommend reading aloud the directions on the paper but also reiterate what was stated above so students truly understand the process of this activity.

*Allow students to decorate and color.

After using several visual patterns as warm ups building up to writing equations, I created this to push my students to figure out how to determine the slope and y intercept of an equation from a table that skips x values and doesn't include 0.

This worked great with Building Thinking Classroom practices, especially with students who are familiar with writing equations from visual patterns. I've personally used it with advanced 6th graders and 7th graders.

A detailed answer key and questions/hints for pushing students thinking are included.

I've also included links to several Desmos activities that I and others have made that help students develop a deeper understanding of writing equations with meaningful feedback (not just telling them if they are right or wrong but showing why).

Noncurricular Task: Estimating Rational and Irrational Numbers

Rectangle Area and Perimeter Thinking Problems

This 4 page packet is the perfect sub plan activity as each page is scaffolded with examples and ordered thoughtfully so that questions get progressively more challenging.

Includes 2 pages of Visual, Solve the Equation, and Check Your Answer and 2 pages of Word Problems where students write the equation. Includes equations of the form Ax+C=Q and Ax+C=Bx+D.

Answer Key included for the first two pages only. The word problem pages have multiple correct answers for some questions.

Adding and Subtracting Integers in a fun and meaningful way!!

Students follow a problem trail around the room and correctly solve problems with positive and negative numbers. If they get the answer correct, they stay on the trail. Get a wrong answer, and you will have to backtrack!!

Students complete word problems, models, and solve expressions.

This activity gets kids up and moving! Students also get instant feedback, so they will not complete a full page of practice incorrectly!
