The 2001 movie, The Luck of the Irish makes a connection with St. Patrick's Day, and the luck of the Irish. Kyle, the main character is trying to discover his heritage and learns a few things about being Irish as he learns. Vocabulary that is learned and reviewed includes: heritage, immigrants, and heritage. Students will learn facts about Ireland and being Irish as they watch the movie.

Students will also learn about problem solving skills, working hard, following rules, working together, and being a good friend, citizen, and family member. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the movie as well as students own experiences. Students can also write sentences uses unknown vocabulary words in sentences. Students can answer these comprehension questions as they watch the movie or after they have finished the movie. As our Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL students are completing written assignments, little words/parts of speech that are commonly confused when writing with words such as there, their, and they're. My students are confusing them for each other continuously. The words there, their, and they're are emphasized in this product. Students will determine if there, their, and they're belong in each sentence, circle the correct use of the word there, their, and they're in sentences, write sentences using there, their, and they're when looking at different picture scenarios, and will write there, their, or they're to complete each sentence. Students are provided space to make up their own sentences using there, their, and they're as well.

The Graphic Novel, Camp By Kayla Miller is a must read for students. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, solving problems, trying new things, and growing up as they navigate middle school. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading.

The 2010 movie, Ramona and Beezus makes a connection with the books written by Beverly Cleary. Students can see Ramona and Beezus as they are at home and school. Students will discuss problem solving skills, the importance of being creative and being yourself, being a good friend, accepting others for who they are, accepting change, working together as a family, while Ramona gets into mischief and has fun.

The novel, Sideway Stories from Wayside School is a great read for students. My students enjoyed this book because it is humorous. It gives students the idea that children know more than their teachers. Each chapter has a vocabulary review and comprehension questions. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading.

In this product, the differences and similarities between writing a realistic fiction story and a nonfiction story are shared so students can decide how they want to write their story about hearing loss or deafness. They can write a realistic fiction story if they want to write about events that did not happen, but could have, or they could write a nonfiction story about their own personal experiences. Students will then pick which genre they want to use to write their story about hearing loss or deafness. Students can follow the example provided that goes through the writing process which shows the following: picking a genre, coming up with two possible story ideas their story could be about, deciding on one of the story ideas, adding more details onto their story idea, writing a rough draft, editing, and writing a final draft if required.
