9th Grade Career and Technical Education Activities (by date, oldest first)

This lesson gives students an introduction to the basics of applying for their first job. This is perfect for a technology, business or social skills class, or a class that focuses on careers. Students learn about the opportunities that may be available to them for their first job and then learn how to apply for the job. They learn about completing a job application, creating a resume in Microsoft Word, and the basics of interviewing with an employer. Students work with a team to create their own answers for commonly asked interview questions and to practice interviewing skills. Finally, students use the Internet to research actual jobs in their area that may be appropriate for them. This project was created for a grade 7-8 Career Exploration/Investigating Careers class, but could easily be adapted for high school students. This project is great for your fashion design students in your entry level class. I usually give my students 10 class days to complete whatever choice they would like to work on from the list. Feel free to give your students whatever timeline fits your lesson plan. I like giving the students choices in case there are students who would like to sketch instead of sewing. No matter what project they choose they are still required to type a paper that discusses the elements and principles of design. Each project has a different set of elements and principles of design that are required for the paper since sometimes it is easier to include certain ones in sewing projects versus sketches.

Prior Knowledge needed:

This project assumes that your class has covered the elements and principles of design but if you have not then feel free to omit that part of the project.

This download includes a rubric as well.

This Look Book Project is great to use at the end of the Elements of Design Unit or it can be a continuous working activity for students to work through as you cover each element throughout your unit.

Use: It can be uploaded to google classroom or any other platform that students can access to work on a google slides template. There is a slide with instructions as well as an example slide, and blank slide with the titles of each of the elements that the students need to include in their look book.

Specifics: This activity has the students upload examples of garments that demonstrate the following elements:

How to Play Connect the Dots

• Print, cut, and laminate the 200 cards provided.

• Put the word cards into box or non-see through bag.

• A player picks two cards and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story should only be 1-2 minutes, complicated, or true!

• Once your class is comfortable with connecting two words, add to your word collection and increase the number of cards selected to three or even four.

Skills

• Moving from one idea to another smoothly, in a way that can be readily understood and followed by your audience, is a must-have public speaking skill.

• Connect the Dots gives people the opportunity to practice. Finding a way to conenct the words and practicing the ability to make those connections will become stronger and stronger.

Leap Year 2024 | Leap Day Activity | Do We Need Leap Year Socratic Seminar: In this Mini Socratic Seminar and Lesson students will mark the text of an article about Leap Year and why we have them. Then they will have a Socratic Seminar in small groups in order to discuss the essential question, “What is a leap year and is it a necessity?”

• Divide your class into pairs.

• Each person interviews the other. The information gained forms a brief introduction speech they'll present to the class OR to smaller groups.

• Establish a time limit for the interviews. 10 minutes works well. Keep track of the time and call change at the halfway point, 5 minutes, to ensure both people get an opportunity to be interviewed and to interview.

• When students present the introduction may begin like this: "This is Mary and she was named after her mother..." and the students will go through each answer by presenting it like a speech.
