High School Career and Technical Education Activities (by date, oldest first)

This lesson gives students an introduction to the basics of applying for their first job. This is perfect for a technology, business or social skills class, or a class that focuses on careers. Students learn about the opportunities that may be available to them for their first job and then learn how to apply for the job. They learn about completing a job application, creating a resume in Microsoft Word, and the basics of interviewing with an employer. Students work with a team to create their own answers for commonly asked interview questions and to practice interviewing skills. Finally, students use the Internet to research actual jobs in their area that may be appropriate for them. This project was created for a grade 7-8 Career Exploration/Investigating Careers class, but could easily be adapted for high school students. This is a great project for your advanced level fashion students.

Prior Knowledge: They need to have created a Mood/Inspiration Board.

They are instructed to use that mood board to create a garment for a "Barbie".

Supplies:

• Barbies available for students to use to create their design.
• Fabric scraps
• Needle & Thread
• Glue Gun

*I had my students use their Mood Board as the backdrop for their photo shoot.

This project is a great tool to help your advanced fashion students create their own fashion line. I use it so my students can plan out what garments they are planning on constructing throughout the school year. Once the students complete this activity, I meet with each of the students individually to go over and discuss their plans and ideas for their fashion line.

There is a list of construction requirements listed that my students must include in their various garments.

This is a great project for your advanced fashion design students. They can make this mood board at the beginning of the school year so they can be posted around the classroom.

Supplies Needed:

• Poster Board
• Fashion Magazines or computer to search for fashion images and then print out in color
• fabric scraps
• jewels, buttons, ribbon, etc.
• glue guns

This project is great for advanced fashion students and gives them a chance to design or create outfits that are complementary to their color season.

• They are given 3 options to demonstrate their color season. They can sketch, take a flat lay photo (this is a picture from above of an outfit with shoes and accessories), or to make a mood board.
• They also have to write a summary about what they learned about their color season

Prior Knowledge: It is helpful for students to know their color seasons prior to this assignment. This document however does include 2 QR code links that help students figure out their color season. It is just not very thorough.

This is a great activity for students to do at the beginning of your Fashion Designer Unit. I like to use it as the first step in my Fashion Designer Research Project.

About this Activity

• Student will research various types of information about a particular Fashion Designer.
• The instructions allow them to chose a Fashion Designer of their choice but it needs to be approved by you so that they get a little bit of freedom but your can make sure that who they chose is an appropriate Fashion Designer for research.
• This is also the information I have them research to create a google slides presentation on their Fashion Designer.

Suggested Timeline:

I give my students one class period to get this activity completed.

This project is great for your fashion design students in your entry level class. I usually give my students 10 class days to complete whatever choice they would like to work on from the list. Feel free to give your students whatever timeline fits your lesson plan. I like giving the students choices in case there are students who would like to sketch instead of sewing. No matter what project they choose they are still required to type a paper that discusses the elements and principles of design. Each project has a different set of elements and principles of design that are required for the paper since sometimes it is easier to include certain ones in sewing projects versus sketches.

Prior Knowledge needed:

This project assumes that your class has covered the elements and principles of design but if you have not then feel free to omit that part of the project.

This is a great project to do once you have covered 20th century fashion. Student will create an informational mood board about a decade that you assign to them. The instructions list tasks and specific information that students must include about their particular decade. My students usually get their mood boards completed within 2-3 days, depending on their thoroughness.

Supplies needed:

poster board

glue stick/glue gun

fabric swatches

fashion magazines

various trinkets for students to use to "jazz up" their mood boards

Alternative Application: students could also make their mood board digitally on Canva or google slides.

I love using these on Friday's in my class. I call them Fashion Sketch Friday's!

This is a great beginning activity to give to your advanced fashion design students. They have to create several different seams and seam finfishes on cotton, knit, and satin fabrics. It is great to give students a point of reference when they go to purchase fabrics for their garments they will be making throughout the class. Students are able to see how each type of fabric reacts to the same seams.

This Look Book Project is great to use at the end of the Elements of Design Unit or it can be a continuous working activity for students to work through as you cover each element throughout your unit.

Use: It can be uploaded to google classroom or any other platform that students can access to work on a google slides template. There is a slide with instructions as well as an example slide, and blank slide with the titles of each of the elements that the students need to include in their look book.

Specifics: This activity has the students upload examples of garments that demonstrate the following elements:

How to Play Connect the Dots

• Print, cut, and laminate the 200 cards provided.

• Put the word cards into box or non-see through bag.

• A player picks two cards and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story should only be 1-2 minutes, complicated, or true!

• Once your class is comfortable with connecting two words, add to your word collection and increase the number of cards selected to three or even four.

Skills

• Moving from one idea to another smoothly, in a way that can be readily understood and followed by your audience, is a must-have public speaking skill.

How to Play History Snippets

• Put the 100 topic cards/papers into a non-see-through bag.

• Put players into teams of 4-6 players.

• When it's their turn a player pulls a topic from the bag. They then must give an account of the history (story) behind the thing or event they've drawn. It can be factual or false! Encourage imagination, outrageous lies, flights of fantasy...

• The goal of this public speaking game is to sustain credible fluency. Aim for 1 - 2 minutes per story.
