Geography, China's Historical One Child Policy, Population Density Cartogram
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Please note: the link to the article no longer works, but a copy of the article is included in the zip file, so the link is not necessary.
population, population ecology, population growth, population pyramid, population density
Get students involved in the learning process through this lesson China's Historical One Child Policy: Creating a Population Density Cartogram. Students will not only learn about the cause and effect of China's One Child Policy of 1979, but will strengthen their knowledge of map creation and reading skills, specific to a cartogram.
Working in collaborative groups, team members will participate in a group reading activity an article on China’s 1979 One-Child Policy Act entitled Too Many In The Family. This article will address the history behind the law, the policy incentives, disobeying the policy, and expectations of the rule. Students to express their thoughts on the topic after the reading and use high-level thinking skills.
In addition, students will have fun collaborating, examining and learning how to read cartograms by creating their own cartogram that reflects the current population of China. This brings the past into the present. Students will need graph paper, colored pencils, a map, and a calculator for this activity.
While this lesson focuses on the original One-Child Policy Act of 1979, there have been additional child policy acts passed since 1979 — the first one being the 2015 Two-Child Policy Act, following the 2021 Three-Child Policy Act. To learn more about these, click on this link: One Child, Two Child, Three-Child, or More
This lesson requires you to be able to open a zip file.

NAFTA & The U.S./Mexico Border
By Sarah Austin
This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Materials: • One 50 Slide PowerPoint • Grading Rubrics • Student Loop Diagram Examples • Printable Handouts: 1) Handout #1- Power-Point Guided Notes 2) Handout #2- The U.S.-Mexico Border Puzzle Pieces If you liked this lesson see the 'BUNDLE unit lesson' here: NAFTA & the U.S. Mexico Border Bundle I OFTEN PROVIDE FREEBIES TO MY FOLLOWERS AND ALL NEW PRODUCTS DEBUT AT 20% OFF: • Look for the green star next to my store logo at the top right corner of this page and click it to become a follower. By Sarah Austin
This lesson will have students explore the two systems of ‘Capitalism’ and ‘Socialism’.
