Guided Reading is a research-based instruction process whereby the teacher works with small grouping of students being equal in a particular reading achievement level. The teacher provides for each reader's development of effective reading competencies. However different than in the earlier days of reading groups, small and temporary groups are flexible and dynamic. The observance and evaluation of the progress of readers are done by teachers on a systematic basis. Thus, grouping and regrouping students is based on the strengths of students and the intense changing needs throughout their reading development.

In the 1960s in New Zealand, Guided Reading was developed. It was enhanced over the years after it arrived in the United States thanks to educators like Gay Su Pinnell and Lesley Fountas. In 1996, Fountas & Pinnell published their enormously influential book, Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children (Heinemann). This book changed how reading was taught, and it is still taught today to over a million teachers worldwide. The aim of Guided Reading lessons is to develop effective readers.

A set of 13 books is bundled together with all 13 worksheets of the Guided Reading series for grades KG-12. There are lesson plans and different activities for every grade, with the answers in the end section of the worksheet.

Mental Health Stigma Activities - This product provides students with information regarding stigma. Students will answer questions regarding technology and social media and how they can affect our ability to show compassion to others, why people forget to take care of themselves and show compassion for themselves, how to stop negative thoughts from happening. Students will review the meaning for stigma, stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination. Students will also review what negative things they have heard about people with mental illness, along with positive things. Talking about how others are different and that's what makes them unique, and how others are stigmatized based on how they look, act, etc. Examples of possible stigmas are presented. The meaning of self-stigma and what examples of self-stigma are presented. Students will also review health conditions or social differences that were stigmatized throughout history, and ways to reduce stigma to eliminate negative feelings.

Throughout this product, students will answer comprehension questions and will also be presented with social scenarios that they may encounter where they are asked how they would feel or what they would do. An attitude survey regarding mental health that contains 10 questions is also included in this product. Students will compare their results when they are finished and will go over the correct answers.

Gratitude Activity – Students will complete a gratitude scavenger hunt, where will they look for things in their environment that they are grateful for and students will answer questions about what they are grateful for such as something that they are thankful for that shows a vibrant color, something that makes them feel strong, something that they recently learned/discovered, etc. students will write about experiences in for which they feel gratitude and expand upon that experience.

Stress Response Adapted Notes - This product provides students with information regarding stress. Students will complete a stress test and reflect on what may cause them stress. Fight/flight/freeze response is also reviewed in this product and how it relates with stress. Once students have taken the stress test, they will analyze their results. Students will work in groups and complete the packet regarding the effects of stress. Students will answer questions such as how they felt when they were feeling stressed, etc. Students will review the effects of stress charts provided that include what happens when the body is in fight or flight compared to when it is relaxed. Students will also learn about the emotional, physical, and mental effects of stress and see how they differ from one another. Students will learn what stress and stressors are when they discuss coping with stress. Healthy and unhealthy strategies to cope with stress are included in this product. Mental Health Promoting Self Care and Strength Notes - This product includes a 2 page teacher guide with tips and tricks when teaching self-management - promoting self-care for mental health and overall well being, an activity that relates with self-management, and a 12 page teacher guide with tips and tricks when teaching resiliency - students will learn from adversity and become a stronger, wiser person. Students will learn about overcoming problems that have helped them to become stronger, sometimes when we have problems we get pushed down and there are different choices we can make. Those choices are reviewed in this product. Students will discuss the importance of learning life lessons, positive feedback, poor habits, and good habits. They will learn the importance of being open-minded and how being open-minded leads to change, growth, and new possibilities. Students are also presented with different words that will help them to remember to have an open mind. Students will learn how to express positive feelings about themselves to help build self-esteem, strengthen their own identity, appreciate positive traits about their peers, and practice appropriate use of social media and mobile technology tools. Students will be presented with a real-life situation about how one woman defined herself and found happiness, they will discuss this individuals feels, how positive traits inspired her, and how she built up her self esteem. Students will discuss positive and neutral character traits, they will identify unique character traits about themselves and discuss them further and how these positive traits promote their overall well being.

Understanding Emotions - In this product, students will discuss what to ask for help for oneself and others. Students will identify and express a variety of feelings, common emotions that students feel, compare their emotions to a roller coaster ride and why that may happen, examples of emotional highs and emotional lows, when we feel emotional highs and lows, we may feel more pressure, and as students grow and develop – they need to deal with pressure. When students feel pressured, they can read the list of healthful ways to handle pressure, the list of feelings that it is okay to feel, what it is never okay to do, feelings and their definitions are included: embarrassment, depression, awkwardness, isolation, confusion, disappointment, hopefulness, optimism, happiness, and excitement. The importance of controlling emotions, suggestions for handling emotions are provided, mood swings, feeling pressure, and irritability are discussed. Students will be presented with different situations where they are required to identify the feeling, helpful ways to deal with the feeling, and harmful ways to deal with the feeling. Transition from elementary to middle school and adolescence are discussed and reviewed. Better techniques that can be used to form healthful relations are taught. Gossiping and annoying behaviors are reviewed and why they are frowned upon is included in this product. Students will also identify emotions, have students describe their own feelings and act out emotions. 10 emotion scenarios are provided for students to identify how students would feel if they were in that situation, students will track their emotions in a 7 day journal that is provided in this packet, coping skills are discussed and how they help us handle emotions in productive and positive ways, so our actions match our behavior, a list of poor coping skills is included along with healthy coping skills. Comprehension questions are asked throughout this product for students. They can be answered individually or as a group and can also be used as a group discussion. Students will work with a partner by following their partners directions, and after the activity, students will evaluate the easiest part of the activity, hardest part of the activity, and answering the question why communication is important when verbalizing or interacting with others, students will read communication starters using facial expression, intonation, and tone of voice, the importance of using facial expression, intonation, and tone of voice are discussed in depth when having a conversation with others, Examples of different tones of voice are included in this product. Students will practice saying an expression a few different ways so they can understand how tone of voice is important, when we are frustrated or annoyed about something our tone of voice changes as does our intonation and facial expression, therefore, alternative strategies students can implement in their day to day routine are provided for when they feel frustrated, and when talking to others, students will learn that by listening to their conversation partner that they will understand how they are feeling based on their facial expressions, intonation, and tone of voice.

Students will talk about stuck feelings and how they get stuck, because you don't know that they are there, or you don't know how to let them go, a story about stuck feelings will be presented to students, and they will be required to answer questions about how they would best solve the problem if they were in the characters shoes, students will talk about pulling out their feelings, sending them away, and letting them go, students will focus on one uncomfortable feeling and will discuss where they can send it to let it go, so it doesn't return, students will talk about what they can do when they feel an unpleasant feeling, they will work on a feelings survival kit that will help them handle a situation in the future where they feel unpleasant feelings, students will discuss the definition of trust and who they can trust to help them when they are feeling unpleasant feelings, they will complete activities such as a buddy walk, trust fall, and trust drawing to help build trust, and students will complete a human knot and will work together with their peers to get out of the knot. Upon completing the human knot, students will complete the journal questions that are included in this product. Students will talk about the importance of communication and how we effectively communicate with others both verbally and nonverbally. Students will play the games telephone, charades, and hello with partners/groups and will reflect on their communication skills in the journal included in this product.

In this product, students will learn how animals obtain energy. They will review vocabulary words and their meanings - ecosystem and organism. Students will learn about the importance of food chains and what each link entails - first link - sun, second link - producers, consumers and how they can be carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, and what each of those consumers means, students will learn about where they get energy from, students will also label the 1st link, 2nd link, producers, and kinds of consumers on food chains. Students will then look at 4 picture cards. They will look at each card and write how each organism gets its energy.

2. Food Chains Adapted Notes and Review:

In this product, students will learn about food chains. Notes and review have been adapted to meet students’ individual learnings needs. Students will review the process of photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and how plants made food. Students will then learn that producers make their own food by using energy from the sun that is changed into chemical energy. Students will also learn about consumers and how they get energy. Students will learn about the food chain - the sun, producers, first-level consumers, second-level consumers, third-level consumers, and decomposers and their meanings, facts about food chains and how the different levels are presented. Students will also look at the arctic food chain and the different levels as well. Students will answer comprehension questions throughout this product to ensure understanding and at the end of the product vocabulary review questions are asked.

3. Food Chains Project:

In this product, students will make a food chain mobile. They will cut out the sun, producers, and consumers cards, they will then make 3 mobiles. They will make a mobile that includes a sun, producer, and carnivore, a mobile that includes a sun, producer, and herbivore, and a mobile that includes a sun, producer, and omnivore. Students can work individually or with a partner or a group to complete this activity. Students will then research if their animal is a carnivore, herbivore, and omnivore and will label the consumer.

4. Food Webs Adapted Notes and Review:

In this product, students will learn about food webs. Notes and review have been adapted to meet students’ individual learnings needs. Students will learn what food webs are and what they look like. Students will compare food chains and food webs and discuss how they are similar and different from one another. Students will review the food chain - the sun, producers, first-level consumers, second-level consumers, third-level consumers, and decomposers. Students will look at food webs and determine the groups of food chains that are in a given food web. Students will answer comprehension questions throughout this product to ensure understanding and at the end of the product vocabulary review questions are asked.

5. Food Chains and Food Webs File Folder Activity:

In this product, students will label the following vocabulary words with their definitions - food webs, predators, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, 1st level consumers, 2nd level consumers, 3rd level consumers, producers, food chain, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and decomposers to review or summarize all that they learned about food chains and food webs. Students will also match the vocabulary words - food chain and food web with the correct diagram. Students will then match the following vocabulary words with the photosynthesis diagram to show that they understand the process of photosynthesis - photosynthesis, light energy, carbon dioxide, oxygen, sugar, and water.

In this product, students will have the opportunity to complete 2 projects - a food chain and and food web project. Students will cut out the pictures and will glue them on a poster board to make a good chain and a food web. When students have completed the food chain and food web project, there are 2 rubrics that will rate the students on each project. Rubric categories include the food chain/web display, food chain/web labeling, and staying on task.

Primary Source Analysis and DBQ's

This 23 page Primary Source Analysis and DBQ activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into the experience of life on the home front in the United States during World War II. There are 20 primary sources and 3 DBQ prompts. After completing this resource, students will be able to determine what issues were important to society during this era. In addition, there are Document-Based Question prompts.

A Lesson Plan and other supplemental information is provided at the beginning of the resource. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers, college students or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student work time will vary dependent on the aforementioned factors.

Also included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources in the packet include text excerpts, photographs and posters. Each page of primary sources includes questions. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. DBQ prompts are also provided. An Answer Key to all the questions, the HAPPY primary source analysis process, and the DBQ’s is available at the end of the packet.

A separate PowerPoint presentation on How to Integrate Sources for a DBQ is included as a Bonus File.

There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option .

Power Point Presentation

This 29 slide presentation about life on the home front in the United States during World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs and posters to convey the experiences on the home front. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding beyond textbook reading. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. This presentation will deepen student understanding about an experience that shaped a nation.

A digital assessment in Easel is provided for teachers to measure student understanding, retention and analysis of the material.

Reading Assignment

This six-page close reading and worksheet activity provides an overview of how life in the United States during World War II. It covers the issues around mobilization, wartime productivity, racism and the opportunities and challenges of the time. Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing.

If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!
