Middle School Math: Taxable Income, Income Tax Game Using Percentages (Easel)

By Geography & Math Made Easy

This is a real-life lesson that encourages students to evaluate taxable income based on one's income and the marginal tax bracket. Kids will love this and have a great time discussing the occupations and how much each is taxed. This lesson does not go as far as to discuss personal deductions and standard deductions, which would lower your taxable income. That is for another day. This is a simple introduction to how Federal taxes are collected.

Focuses on taxable Income, understanding taxes, calculating taxes

Easel Activity Included

OBJECTIVE

  • The learner will be able to calculate taxable income based on tax brackets based on percentages.
  • The learner will understand the purpose of taxation and the difference between state and federal tax.

MATERIALS

  • Occupation Game Cards (1 set of 24 per group) and
  • Chart (1 per student)
  • Game Instructions

PREPARATION

o Set up the classroom desks or tables so that students are sitting in groups of two or three.

INTRODUCTION: (20 minutes)

Ask students:

Available with purchase

GAME INSTRUCTIONS

Divide students into groups of two or three. Each group will receive a set of Occupation Game Cards. It is suggested that you laminate the cards, cut them, and place them in zip-lock bags so they can be used every year.

Students will be directed to place all cards face down. Distribute the Marginal Tax Bracket Chart.

Students within the group will take turns turning over an Occupation Game Card. Each will write the occupation, taxable income, and income tax percent using the Marginal Tax Bracket Chart provided on each student’s activity sheet (see below). Students will work together to calculate the income tax and lifetime total.

Alternative: you may have students compete against those within their team as another way to play, rather than having one group compete against the other groups in the class. Whatever works best for your students and classroom environment is the best route to take.

The goal is to reach a lifetime total of 100,000 taxable incomes to win. This will require multiple games, or to make it more challenging, raise the Lifetime taxable income goal to 150,000 or 200,000, which will make the game run longer.

Students can create charts on notebook paper for additional games.

Once they reach the lifetime goal, they win that round. Then have them play again.

Middle School Math & Geography: Road Trip, Measurement & Calculations

By Geography & Math Made Easy

**Get your students moving through the United States while learning geography and math skills. **Students will move through the United States as they travel through seven destinations of their choice. This activity integrates math and geography, featuring map reading and measurement using a map scale. It includes calculations for gas costs, driving times, mileage, and more.

This resource encourages students to **problem-solve **while accurately using a map scale to plan a round trip across the United States. As students calculate distances, mileage, driving times, and gas expenses, they will develop higher-order thinking skills with real-life application.

This engaging activity empowers students to take ownership of their learning. Additionally, the instructions offer helpful tips on using yarn to teach how to measure distances on a road map. Students will learn how travel was done before GPS. Although we rely on GPS systems to get us from Point A to Point B, it is still important to know in today's digital age.

While GPS navigation systems and online mapping tools have made it easier to find our way around, having a good grasp of map scales can still come in handy. By using a map scale, students can accurately calculate distances on maps and understand the relationship between the physical size of the area being represented and its distance on the map. This skill can be useful for planning road trips, hiking excursions, or even understanding the layout of a city. Additionally, knowing how to read a map scale can help students develop spatial awareness and improve their overall geographical knowledge. So, while technology may make navigation more convenient, learning how to use a map scale is still a valuable skill that will never go out of style.

This activity incorporates math with geography:

  • Measurement
  • Gas Cost Calculations
  • Driving Time Calculations
  • Mileage Calculations &
  • Map Reading

This lesson will require each team has a large laminated road map that can be purchased through or donated by your local stores, such as Walmart or Target.

If you have a way to make poster-sized maps, you can google the road maps of America and there are many that can be found.

High School Geometry Review - Placemat Activity - slow growing

By Brooke Seabolt Math Resources

Placemats are a highly engaging activity where students work together to race against other groups of students. There are currently 20 placemats of 4 problems each that cover the year of high school geometry. You can modify to use as a unit, semester, or end of year review. You can pick and choose which topics to include as all 20 would be too much to do in one class period.

I will be adding placemats as time allows. Any additions will be included with your purchase.

Topics included:

  • logic vocabulary
  • angle addition postulate
  • segment addition postulate
  • special angles pairs (parallel lines cut by a transversal)
  • Pythagorean Theorem
  • special right triangles
  • right triangle trigonometry
  • special segments of a triangle
  • completing the square to find radius
  • central and inscribed angles
  • area of regular polygons
  • transformations
  • distance
  • probability
  • area of 2D shapes
  • volume of 3D shapes
