This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the big song contest that takes place every year and gets all of Europe excited! This year the contest will be hosted by Liverpool, England and will take place between May 7-11.

This French reading activity includes three versions of the article - one for novice learners, one for intermediate learners (includes more past tense and expanded vocabulary) and one for advanced learners (includes the subjunctive and other more complex verb tenses). No matter which version you use with your students, the comprehension questions in French and English will allow them to show you that they've understood. Each reading includes a glossary at the bottom of each page.

In addition to the readings, you will find an answer key and related resources - including a list to the playlist of all the songs! Your students can use the included voting form to rate each song and determine which ones they think have earned enough points to move on. Need a fun way to start the year in World Language class?  How about a team-building  game!  This reading about why students should learn another language goes from dull to exciting as students work together and move around the room to solve a mystery!  This is a simple “print and go” with no work for the teacher!  This is a great way to get the year started with new students, or to provide motivation when you see interest and effort waning.  This activity is in English, and can be used by any World Language class!

All World Language teachers want to motivate and encourage our students, and help them see the value of becoming proficient in the language they’re studying. This story gives 10 teen-friendly reasons why it’s so beneficial to prioritize learning a new language! 

The story revolves around two teens trying to decide what classes to take.  Your students play the role of the mystery solvers.  They have to read all 10 parts of the story to figure out the answer to the final question;  what will the students grow up to be in their career?   While your students read the story parts, they are looking for “code words” in the story.  Students record the code words on a special answer sheet that will eventually lead them to solving the mystery of teens’  future career.  It’s so much fun! 

After, you can decide which of the 4 follow-up activities you want to do with your students.  There are 4; a True or False Activity to check for basic comprehension, a “tell me in your own words” summary activity, an opportunity to work with a group and write a story about a adventure the teens will have in their career (which can be done in the TL),  and an activity where they can explore possible careers for bilingual people.   Answer key to the True/False is also included.  Best of all?  If there’s something you’d like to change for your students, you are free to edit!

This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the invention and use of the guillotine. It is suitable for novice-high/intermediate-low students with teacher guidance and higher-level students to work independently.  If you teach AP French, this reading can be useful in giving your students practice reading nonfiction articles for the interpretive section of the test.  The reading can lead to discussion or writing activities to include the other two modes of communication.

The guillotine is a scary reminder of a horrific time in history - streets running red with blood, severed heads held up before the cheering crowds. But its invention was for humane reasons, and the French weren't the only ones to use it. Learn about the history of this machine of death in this reading for intermediate/advanced French learners.

This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the interesting lives of spiders.  It is suitable for novice-high/intermediate-low students with teacher guidance and higher-level students to work independently.  If you teach AP French, this reading can be useful in giving your students practice reading non-fiction articles for the interpretive section of the test.  The reading can lead to discussion or writing activities to include the other two modes of communication.

French This or That Activity - Ceci ou Cela French Icebreaker

This French ceci ou cela - this or that activity is perfect for back to school, end of the year, or anytime when everyone wants to have a little fun with French.

Use this "this or that" activity as a French speaking activity for partners or groups, as a whole-class activity you project for the entire class.

Alternatively, you can make this a moving around activity. Students start by standing in a big group. When the choices on the cards are read, they move to the side of the room that is associated with their choice (see the arrows on the cards). Those who can’t make up their mind or don’t have a preference remain in the center. Students will see all of the things that they have in common with their classmates and will likely learn some new vocabulary while they’re at it. This is a great back to school ice-breaker!

This activity requires no teacher prep once the set of cards is printed and cut out. If you don’t want to print, there’s a PDF with only one card per page that you can project and play as a whole class activity.
