For example, it was Veblen who coined the term "conspicuous consumption" to describe a type of consumer spending that was intended primarily to show off one's wealth — which is one reason why Gatsby's parties are so lavish! This handout features key quotations from Veblen and other sociologists that will help students arrive at a deeper understanding of the difference between "Old Money" and "New Money." (1 page).

• "Old Money" vs. "New Money" Worksheet (or Quiz): The second worksheet builds upon the handout above and enables teachers to assess whether students are able to decode status differences. The worksheet challenges students to determine whether 16 different adjectives — such as "refined," "ostentatious," "exuberant," and "aloof" — would most likely characterize "Old Money" or "New Money." • Analyzing Evidence Worksheet: This short worksheet challenges students to connect Nick's assessment that Jordan is a "rotten driver" with Nick's last words to Gatsby, "They're a rotten crowd." The example given is Mao Zedong's Resume'. Students will create an objective as to what job the character is applying. The character's education, work experience, etc. will be included. Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis is not an easy text to grasp, even for adults. This escape room is the perfect way to review the renowned tale in a fun yet rigorous way so that your students come away from the lesson with a greater understanding of Kafka's existentialist masterpiece.

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. How does it work?

• Crossword Puzzle: In the first task, students solve a crossword puzzle with questions about literary elements, quotes, and plot details within Metamorphosis.
• Literary Match Up: In the second task, students draw lines to match passages within the story to the literary element they represent. (Elements included: 3 types of irony, alliteration, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, personification)
• Missing Word: In the third task, students fill in the blanks of notable quotes within the story.
• Plot it Out: In the fourth task, students must order the plot events of Metamorphosis on Freytag's Pyramid.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the final task, students must complete a jig saw puzzle (2 separate puzzles included for differentiation) that reveals a quote from Franz Kafka that connects to major themes within Metamorphosis. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, your students transform back into human beings!
