$5 - $10 Higher Education Spanish Cultural Activities (by date, oldest first)

El Camino de Santiago is one of the most interesting cultural features of Spain!  This interactive Google Slides Presentation designed to be presented in Spanish uses beautiful images and Pear Deck to engage Spanish students in a lesson about what the Camino is and why different people make the trek. Slides contain speaker notes to guide you in what to tell students about El Camino.  The presentation and interactive student questions are designed to be in Spanish, but it is easily editable if you would like to change it to English!

In addition to the presentation, there are 4 activity suggestions.  First is a 3-page article about El Camino de Santiago written in Spanish.  Next, I suggest showing a portion of the movie “The Way” with Martin Sheen.  Unfortunately, this movie is only in English, which is why I only show a portion of it.  But the scenery and the message of the movie are so worth it!!  After students see a portion of the movie, there are group discussion questions about the movie included.  I linked in my Extempore activity under the written questions- feel free to email me if you would like to know more about that website!  Last, I have students write the next scene of the movie!  They must demonstrate the spirit of El Camino and some elements of what they’ve learned about El Camino in their writing.

This is a great cultural activity for more advanced Spanish students, and it goes perfectly with the AP Unit 5: Factors that Influence our Quality of Life!

Who can use this product:

• It’s designed for students in Years 4 and 5 and/or AP (but can be modified if you would like)

How can I use this product?

• The entire activity is digital and easy to assign/present in Google Classroom (or other learning management platform)
• This activity can also be presented to an in-person class, or a hybrid class
• The presentation and reading can be used alone
• If you want to show the movie The Way, the discussion questions and partner writing assignment go nicely with that!

What’s included in this product?

• A 15-slide Google Slides presentation with interactive Peardeck questions.  (Don’t use Peardeck?  No problem- just ask the question to the class and have some students answer before moving to the next slide!)
• Speaker notes with all slides
• A Google Doc article about El Camino de Santiago (in Spanish)
• A Google Doc with class/small group discussion questions about the movie The Way (these are meant to help them think about the movie in preparation for their writing assignment)
• A google doc writing assignment with rubric (can be used for small groups, partners or individual students)

AP Spanish® teachers: save time searching for the right video for your students! This Google Doc contains links to TWO YouTube videos and a viewing guides perfect for Unit 6: Los retos ambientales. One video has an auto-grading Edpuzzle version! The accompanying comprehension questions are digital for distance learners and printable for in-person learners, and they are customizable to make them just right for your students’ needs! 

Have students watch these videos to get a sense of some of the problems we face with our environment. One video talks about 5 specific problems in Mexico, their causes and their consequences. It is a short video, but the narrator speaks rather fast. This resource comes with a comprehension guide in graphic organizer format, or you may choose to use the multiple choice Edpuzzle version. I find that the Edpuzzle version is a good scaffold to aid student comprehension because the questions can be inserted right after the information has been provided! This Edpuzzle is also auto-graded to save you time and to give students instant feedback! The second video is about what would happen if all the ice in the world were to melt. It talks about the possibilities and the human and animal consequences that would occur. This video is accompanied by short answer comprehension questions.

Of course, both viewing guides come with a teacher answer key, and all questions can be edited to suit your needs!

Environmental challenges is a great theme to explore as a Global Challenge, or as part of the Science and Technology Unit.  These videos could be a great source for a debate as this topic can be controversial!

• Students at the Intermediate level of the ACTFL proficiency chart or higher
• AP Spanish® Students

How can I use this product?

• Assign these videos and viewing guides for in-class or for homework
• Ask students to discuss the information they heard about in the videos.  Ask provocative questions and get students to play devil’s advocate to support the other side!
• Use small group or whole-class instruction to discuss the bias in these videos
• Use the information students learn from the videos as sources for students to use to debate whether or not these environmental challenges will really result in the consequences presented in the videos
• Works well with Unit 4 or Unit 6 of the AP® curriculum!
