Bundle: Year Long Programming in Java Course

By Howlin' Husky Math Games

Hello and welcome!

Are you math teacher and have been thrown into teaching a computer science course? Now you have NO IDEA where to start! Have you taught computer science, but want to try something else? Are you teaching AP Computer Science A and need materials? Math and computer science are related, but are not the same!

I have your back. I've been teaching math and computer science, including APCSP, APCSA, and Data Structures for almost two decades. I also teach an introduction course. This is part of the course I made up for my intro students. I have a BS in computer science and know what students need to know.

This bundle is HUGE! It has more than you can cover in one year in a programming course. It starts with the very basic "Hello World" program, goes through loops and logic, to classes with an optional lesson on arrays. This first semester is equivalent to a college level programming course.

The course then takes a fun turn into using the JSwing package and forms in Java.

To top off the course, it ends with game creation. It teaches students how to use Listeners, Timers, and create their own Sprites. This is an out of the box experience that students will love.

All lessons will come with the following:

a pdf slideshow - Can be teacher or student driven!

an assignment - differentiated with three different levels!

a pacing guide with hints for teaching the section and common student
errors

an answer key in pdf form - For a quick check

an answer key in .java form - Runnable out of the box.

You can pick and choose the ones you like or have students do their best to reach the "Hacker" level. This will last about a mark period and can be extended easily!

Depending on your style, you could go over the slides as a group, then let students play around. Or you could just give them the slides and assignment and let them go.

Let students explore and make mistakes. Let them talk to each other and discuss their approaches. Programming takes a lot of trial and error and collaboration.

Great for asynchronous learning and homeschooling! Could be used as a self- taught course or go at your own pace! Everything for learning is included!

Welcome to the world of programming! It's going to be a blast!

Real-Life Math fun! Exciting Data and Stats Activity - Why so many white cars?

By Daniel

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students.

This DIY hands-on project takes students through the process of collecting, sharing, representing and analyzing qualitative data. Students collect data on the brand, color and type of cars and then present their data in bar and circle graphs.

  • Why are there so many white cars on the road?
  • Why are some roads full of potholes?
  • Which brand of car is the most popular in my town?

I have done this project multiple times, have "ironed out any administrative wrinkles" in the practical application of the project and it works every time. Students have a lot fun with the project. They take ownership of the project, since they collect the data themselves.

Qualitative Data, Bar Graphs, Line Graph, Circle Graph, Pie Chart, Statistics, Data, Histogram, Line Graph, Box-and-Whiskers Plot, Stem-and-Leaf Plot.

You might also not want to miss out on these other resources in the Series on Stats and Data!

Zoo Design Geometry Project MYP Criterion D

By MsVisualizer

This project assesses students ability to draw rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids of given areas on a scaled grid. They will need to be able to use the area formulas to work backwards to find side lengths that fit the requirement for each animal and use the formulas to show that their area calculation is correct.

A detailed MYP Criterion D (Applying Mathematics in the Real World) Rubric is included.

I spent about 2 and a half 90 minute class periods on this project and many students needed to spend some time on it at home as well. I also included several days of activities I did to prepare my students for the skills they would need.

Real-Life Math Fun Data, Statistics Collection Activity- make Real-Life Choices!

By Daniel

This classroom tried and tested data and statistics activity helps students to see the benefit of gathering their own quantitative and qualitative data to make real-life choices. We have all wondered - which water container should I buy? Are the expensive water containers really that much better? Students compare 4 water containers quantitatively for how effectively they keep water warm and cold. They also compare them qualitatively, looking at price, durability, design and other subjective measures.

This resource works great as ...

  • a task
  • a class project (it takes roughly a week)
  • distance learning
  • math centers
  • constructive group work when introducing the topic of data and statistics.

And, Now with the Olympic Games just gone by, you must get these other activities for Data and Stats as well!

What is a lapbook?

A lapbook is a book made from a file folder that includes various information about a topic. Students can create a lap book by cutting, coloring (when needed), and gluing them inside a file folder. The finished file folder book is called a lapbook because the book is usually big enough to spread out on your lap to read.

Lapbooks do not come with specific assembly instructions. Students are to use the information to build their books creatively and uniquely! This is a fun way for students to learn and get hands-on with the information!

All of the hard work is done for you. Just print the pieces, give each student one file folder, and let your students get creative!

Create a Town PBL | Project Based Learning

By Dovie Funk

Your students will LOVE this engaging PBL Build a Town project! Students pick the businesses they would like in their town, complete pages designing candy, cupcakes, a community park, as well as a ball park. I've even thrown in some math and paragraph writing.

Activity pages included are:

  • Describe Your Town
  • Who's in Charge? (Mini-Mayoral Election)
  • Design a City Park
  • Candy Shop (Adding Money - Dollars and Cents)
  • Bakery (Adding Money - Dollars and Cents) Using Multiplication, if able)
  • Fruit and Vegetable Stand (Adding Money - Dollars and Cents - Three Addends)
  • Design a Ball Park
  • The Main Event (Paragraph Writing)
  • The Final Project

In The Final Project students draw a diagram with roads, then color their buildings and houses. Next, they cut out and glue the buildings where they choose. Finally, they add any other features such as street lights, traffic signs, park benches, etc. The finished products will make a great bulletin board or wall display!
