Subtraction Whole Numbers and Decimals - Lesson - TEKS: 4.4A
By Sprout and Thrive
This product is intended to be used in a classroom modeled after Peter Liljedahl’s book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. This product is a day’s lesson or two days depending on your class's needs.
Launch Script: Slide 3. (Slides 4-5 are strategies if needed for struggling learners.) This is the mini lesson. It should be quick, 5-10 minutes.
Task cards: Slides 6-11 (answer sheet and key, slides 12-13) They can be laminated or paper copy to write on, table scoot, homework, game board cards, or team problem solving. They can also be used in a building thinking classroom. There are three types of questions which are marked in the bottom right corner with a snap cube. One snap cube is a type one (mild) question – subtracting whole numbers mixed regrouping, two snap cubes is a type two (medium) question – subtracting decimals with some whole numbers mixed regrouping, and three snap cubes is a type three (spicy) question – subtracting whole numbers and decimals with all regrouping. There are so many options to use them with. There is a free game board located in my store, Sprout & Thrive.
Consolidation: Slide 14. Wrap up the lesson after tasks. This is like a second mini lesson. Have students gather around and possibly walk the room to show varying strategies used by classmates.
Notes: Slides 15-16. This page is intended to be printed for students to write on and glue into journals or hole punched for a notebook.
Check Your Understanding: Slides 17-18. Students complete so the teacher can check to see what the student does or does not understand. It is meant to go in a certain order so that you, the teacher, know where a student begins to struggle – A, B, C, D, etc. – down each column of Mild, Medium, Spicy.

Montessori Snake Game: Roman Numerals 1-100, Addition & Subtraction with Beads
By Jessica Renee Montessori - JRMontessori
Teaching Roman numerals is a fun way to practice addition and subtraction of 1 and 10. I've taken a classic Montessori math work (the Snake Game) and added a unique twist. The snakes in this set represent the Roman numerals from 1–100. If your lower elementary children are ready for a fun new challenge, these cards are the perfect independent activity to get them excited about math again.
Only 5 different Montessori beads are used to make the Roman numerals from 1-100. Can you guess what they are? One, five, ten, negative 1, and negative 10! Your students will count the beads in the snake image and then use the included cards to form the matching Roman numeral. As usual, they’ll love the satisfaction of checking the answer on the back of the card. And you’ll love that they can do this work independently! There’s even a fun worksheet to track which cards they’ve completed.
What’s included:
Your students will love this new take on the classic Montessori favorite–the Snake Game. They'll be engaging in a fun new activity, practicing their math facts without even realizing it, and learning a new number system all at the same time. That’s something to be proud of!
**Prep is quick and easy...**all you need to do is print the file double-sided and cut on the cutting lines. There are no annoying borders to cut off! You don’t even need to use actual Montessori beads if you don’t have them, the file has everything you need. Now you’re ready to bring some new excitement to your math area!

Comparing Linear Functions BTC Thin Slicing Group Activity | Grade 8 Math
By EZMath
This "Thin Slicing" activity on comparing linear functions gets your 8th grade students thinking about linear functions. These progressively challenging task cards start students with simple proportional relationships and progress up to writing a linear function from only two ordered pairs, graphs with differently scaled axes, and tables with minimal information. Students must work together to compare rates of change and initial values for multiple functions, including tables, graphs, equations, and scenarios.
Great as a review activity, or as an introduction to comparing linear functions after your students have learned slope-intercept form.
This lesson with printable task cards uses Building Thinking Classrooms strategies for teaching math created by Peter Liljedahl. If you have been looking to implement the Building Thinking Classrooms model of instruction, but don't know where to start, this is a great resource for you.
This lesson includes the following materials:
If you enjoy this product, please leave a review and check out my other products. I will be adding more Thin Slicing lessons in the future based on this model.
If you would like to know more about how I use Building Thinking Classrooms in my own class, check out my blog. I am also creating and refining more thin slicing lessons, so follow my store or check back regularly to see what's new.

Montessori Math Place Value Bring Me Game - Golden Beads Numeracy Materials
By Jessica Renee Montessori - JRMontessori
Are you a Montessori math teacher who is tired of being the sole facilitator of the beloved "Bring Me Game"? Download the Montessori Math Place Value Bring Me Game for an amazing set of task cards that will revolutionize the way the Golden Bead materials are used in your classroom.
This isn't just another boring worksheet! Now, two lower elementary students can engage in the Bring Me Game without any teacher assistance. This resource includes a visual control of error, making it possible for Partner A and Partner B to play independently. Imagine the excitement on their faces and the confidence they'll gain as they embark on this mathematical adventure together!
Here's how it works: Partner A takes the lead and reads out a number to Partner B. Without any hesitation, Partner B gets up and collects the corresponding numeral cards and/or the majestic golden beads. The magic happens when Partner A and B check the back of the card. There, they'll find the correct numeral displayed in expanded form, along with the corresponding golden beads. It's a full-package deal, enhancing their understanding of place value in the most interactive and engaging manner.
With 30 double-sided cards, you'll have an abundance of opportunity for scaffolded practice. As your students progress through the game, the difficulty level will gradually increase, ensuring their continuous growth in this fundamental mathematical concept. From three 1-digit cards to eight 2-digit cards, and from nine 3-digit cards to nine 4-digit cards, the possibilities for learning are endless!
Grab the Montessori Math Place Value Bring Me Game and witness the transformative power it holds for your students. This innovative tool will not only captivate their imagination, but also foster a deep understanding of place value. Watch as their confidence soars and their love for math blossoms.
