This is a quick way to introduce students to the rise of South Korea’s economy through the export of cultural products such as K-pop or K-dramas between 2000 and 2020. The Assessment questions on the second page ask students to identify key concepts and information that they just read. This helps students to strengthen their close reading skills with a topic with which they might have some superficial knowledge. Most students have heard of BTS or other Korean K-pop bands but this text reading gives more historical background as to how South Korean culture has gained global popularity in the past two decades. Most students learn about the Korean War in their World History or US History classes but rarely about anything else relating to Korea. What is the Hallyu Wave? Reading Worksheet and Assessment * ELA
By Christa Nonnemaker
This one-page Guided Reading and Assessment is for Grade 6-12 students and can be used in a variety of ways by teachers including close reading, direct instruction, independent practice, homework, or as a sub lesson. This is also well-suited to Homeschooling.
This Guided Reading document provides a description of the worldwide phenomenon known as the Hallyu Wave. This supplements their understanding of South Korea with a look at a significant post-war development.
This resource includes:
An informative 404-word passage entitled “What is the Hallyu Wave?” The text describes the development of South Korean culture between the years 2000 and 2020.
An Assessment with 9 questions. These involve determining key facts, ideas and vocabulary from the passage and interpreting text. The questions align with Common Core Informational Standards
Three Enrichment Activities that can further an in-class period or for students to complete on their own. These activities are suitable for group or individual work.
An Answer Key with all answers to the questions.
A list of sources for bibliographic reference.
This is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.
