NEW! GEOGRAPHY: WORLD RELIGIONS PHOTO GALLERY WALK | WORLD RELIGION
By Geography & Math Made Easy
A photo gallery walk is a fun and engaging way to get your student actively involved in the learning process. Students will work together in teams or cooperative groups and will travel through 12 picture galleries learning about the different world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism among other religions. This is a great activity for an introductory lesson or for a reinforcement activity!
Covers the traditions and practices of the world’s most influential religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islamism, Taoism, Animism, Shintoism, Monotheism, Polytheism & non-religions: Atheism, Agnosticism. The lesson teaches the difference between polytheistic and monotheistic religions.
OBJECTIVE:
MATERIALS:
INCLUDES:
IMPORTANT NOTE:
World religions can be a sensitive topic. When presenting the religions and discussing them do not show any bias’ toward one religion. Remain neutral so as not to lean to accept one religion over the other. This is a factual lesson that helps students understand culture throughout the world as many cultural practices are relative to a specific religion within the region. You may have some parents who prefer their child to not be taught this within the classroom setting. If your district has a policy where parents can request their child not attend class during a sensitive topic, then send out a letter to all parents communicating that your class is starting a unit on world religions and have them sign it to opt-out or opt-in. Follow your district’s guidelines.

NAFTA & The U.S./Mexico Border
By Sarah Austin
This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Materials: • One 50 Slide PowerPoint • Grading Rubrics • Student Loop Diagram Examples • Printable Handouts: 1) Handout #1- Power-Point Guided Notes 2) Handout #2- The U.S.-Mexico Border Puzzle Pieces If you liked this lesson see the 'BUNDLE unit lesson' here: NAFTA & the U.S. Mexico Border Bundle I OFTEN PROVIDE FREEBIES TO MY FOLLOWERS AND ALL NEW PRODUCTS DEBUT AT 20% OFF: • Look for the green star next to my store logo at the top right corner of this page and click it to become a follower. Geography and Science: Did China Slow the Earth? Three. Gorges Dam
By Geography & Math Made Easy
This geography and science lesson is intriguing and engaging! The construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the largest hydropower project in the world — that took 18 years to build and over 40,000 workers,—has sparked numerous controversies and debates regarding its impact on the environment.
One of the most intriguing claims is that the immense weight of the dam's reservoir has caused the rotation of the Earth to slow down. Some scientists argue that the shift in mass could potentially affect the Earth's rotation, while other scientists neglect the belief. The Earth's rotation is influenced by a multitude of factors, including natural processes such as earthquakes and the melting of polar ice caps, making it unlikely that the Three Gorges Dam alone could significantly slow down the planet. Students will work together to complete the Doodle Notes that go along with the PowerPoint presentation. Students will hypothesis whether the Three Gorges Dam has slowed the earth.
Note: This lesson supports the idea that the dam has slowed the earth's rotation and provides the scientific backing for it. Please feel free to modify this lesson to support one or the other side.

NEW! Geography — Regions Simplified: Functional Formal Perceptual (PowerPoint)
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Please Note: The instructor/teacher will need to know and understand the concept of REGIONS as this is a concept difficult for young brains to grasp. Even though we simplify it for students, we will need to be ready to verbally or visually explain the concept. Not all students are ready for this high-level concept. This lesson simplifies it as much as possible, but the concept, no matter how simplified, still requires high-level thinking skills and teacher guidance. It takes practice to identify the formal, functional, and perceptual regions. If the instructor/teacher doesn't understand regions, it will be difficult to instruct. This lesson is much better than our textbooks provide.
Help our students understand the complicated concept of "regions."
I often found when I was teaching the 5 Geographical Themes, students grasp location, place, human-environment interaction & movement (ideas, people, goods), but they struggle with regions: formal, functional, and perceptual.
What is the difference between a formal, functional, and perceptual region?
What is a nodal point? How can there be regions that cannot be measured and are specifically based on feelings and perceptions? Can all regions be found on a map? Do they always have a clearly defined boundary?
This PowerPoint provides 7 scenarios in which students are required to decipher whether it is a formal, functional, or perceptual region. You can use it as an introduction or review. You may implement this in different ways.
