This product is notes over the Basic Facts of North America. It includes topics such as largest and smallest country, largest cities, geographical extremes, regional facts, and regional landmarks. The notes and fill in the blanks are in PDF form. A link to a google slides that you can make a copy of is included at the end of the notes section.

Please Note: The instructor/teacher will need to know and understand the concept of REGIONS as this is a concept difficult for young brains to grasp. Even though we simplify it for students, we will need to be ready to verbally or visually explain the concept. Not all students are ready for this high-level concept. This lesson simplifies it as much as possible, but the concept, no matter how simplified, still requires high-level thinking skills and teacher guidance. It takes practice to identify the formal, functional, and perceptual regions. If the instructor/teacher doesn't understand regions, it will be difficult to instruct. This lesson is much better than our textbooks provide.

Help our students understand the complicated concept of "regions."

I often found when I was teaching the 5 Geographical Themes, students grasp location, place, human-environment interaction & movement (ideas, people, goods), but they struggle with regions: formal, functional, and perceptual.

What is the difference between a formal, functional, and perceptual region?

What is a nodal point? How can there be regions that cannot be measured and are specifically based on feelings and perceptions? Can all regions be found on a map? Do they always have a clearly defined boundary?

This PowerPoint provides 7 scenarios in which students are required to decipher whether it is a formal, functional, or perceptual region. You can use it as an introduction or review. You may implement this in different ways.

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. This 71-page no-prep, no planning document has everything you need to introduce your students to geography, cartography, mapping and navigation - En Français!

This cross-curricular pedagogical document will provide you with a 37-page slide deck, complete with terms, definitions, examples, discussion prompts, images, games and activities. It also includes a 33-page student workbook complete with printable worksheets, activities, partner work, research, a final project as well as answer keys, a final project rubric and success criteria.

My slides are never babyish and are suitable for grades 4 through 7. They are suitable for students "en adaptation scolaire," or as a simple introduction to concepts covered in grades 5-7. I teach grades 5 and 6, and this works wonderfully for us!

The first half of the document is your teachable slide deck. In it, you'll find:

• A "Would you rather" style game as a warm up!
• A reflection question.
• A discussion prompt to illicit prior knowledge.
• An in-depth look at some of the earliest maps, their history, their evolution, their purpose, the material used and the process behind them.
