Valentine's Day Reading Comprehension and Sequencing Craft

Students will love this Valentine's Day themed, educational activity that goes along with one of my favorite Valentine's Day books: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose.

UPDATE! This activity now includes link to a DIGITAL version of the activity and assessments so you can continue to use this with your remote learners.

No book? No problem! A link to the story read aloud on YouTube is included on the directions page!

Use with the book There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Rose. Students can read the story and use the picture "leaves" to sequence the events of the story as they add leaves to their rose.

Includes a differentiated sequencing assessment (fill in the blank and multiple choice versions) along with a list of seven easy ways to differentiate instruction with this resource.

French Sound Mats-Les Voyelles-SOR sound activity-Phonemic Awareness Centres

French Sound Mats – Les voyelles

These activity mats were designed with the K-3 teacher in mind. As you introduce new sounds to your Kindergarten/Grade One students, you can use the image pages for students to show sound recognition and phonemic awareness before they are able to identify letters/graphemes. As students grow in confidence, you can add the element of identifying CV sounds or VC sounds containing the target sound. Each mat has 6 cards that will contain the target sound. Students choose the card they think is the correct one, and attach the card to the mat with Velcro dots. The third and final level is identifying the target sound inside a word. Students will need to decode sounds to correctly determine the 6 matching cards that go on the mat. This resource will grow with your students as their abilities grow.

How to prepare this resource:

Make a copy of each page and laminate the page

Cut out the activity mat (the part on the left side of the page) and the activity cards (12 cards per mat)

Insert all the materials into a plastic bag, zipper pouch, or activity basket and you have a brand new independent work station for your Science of Reading lesson!

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from Kindergarten to Grade Three will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

When to use this resource in the classroom:

After you have delivered your lesson on the Science of Reading and you have introduced and reviewed the target sound, you may want to show students how to use the resource in a group lesson.

Once students have the idea in mind and can identify the target sound cards, it’s time to make it a centre and let them explore the resource on their own!

Kindergarten High Frequency Word Class Benchmark Assessment

Efficient High-Frequency Word Recognition Benchmarking with Google Sheets™

These words are taught within the EL Education Skills Block Lessons for first grade. Duplicate words have been removed with the first occurrence of the word remaining for a total of 44 words per probe. Words appear in in the order they are taught.

This all-in-one Google Sheets™ workbook is designed to help you benchmark high-frequency word recall for up to 40 students, six times a year! With individual tabs for each student, you can easily track progress and analyze data for your entire class or caseload, making it easy to create accurate IEP goals and share data with parents or administrators. The workbook even features automatic tracking of missed words for targeted practice, and student and class average or median graphs to demonstrate progress throughout the year.

What is included in the Google Sheets™ workbook:

CLASS DATA SHEET: A sheet displaying the scores for your entire class across six reporting periods, with conditional formatting to highlight students in the low or high range. You can use filters to identify students in need of word recall intervention.
CLASS AVERAGE AND MEDIAN GRAPHS: Two graphs that show the overall average and median growth across the six reporting periods, with a trend line to demonstrate whether student high-frequency word recall is increasing or decreasing.
ASSESSOR PROBES: Each student (up to 40) will have a tab within the workbook with six assessments per tab. Simply check the missed words to calculate words read correctly. Missed words are also tracked and added to the "Words to Practice" box and the student graph!

109 High-Frequency Words Assessment Benchmark & Data Tracking in GOOGLE SHEETS™
