1950s Consumer Sears Catalog Simulation
By Sarah Austin
The year is 1956. You & your partner have taken advantage of new economic conditions & purchased a suburban home. Upon moving to the suburbs, you find you need to fill your home with clothes & furniture.
Use the Sears catalog provided to fill your home. The average monthly income in the USA in 1955 was $360. Let’s say you & your partner have been saving, and have a savings account of $600. The mortgage payment on your home is $60 per month, & let's say you use $40 per month for groceries. That leaves you with $500 to spend for the month!
Fill out the provided order sheet with the products you want to buy, and their prices. Do not spend more than $500, because then you will end up in debt! Beware–life events and circumstances happen, so adjust accordingly!

File Folder Board Games Practice Turn taking, Rules, Politeness (Special Ed)
By Until the Pieces Fit
6 File Folder Games
File folder games allow students opportunities to learn to through play. Communication and appropriate interactions are important skills they will need throughout life.
This set provides 6 different activities, however they each follow the same general rules, expectations, and idea. I use this with my kiddos that need practice turn taking, losing (students may lose a desired game piece), cooperation, following directions, matching and so much more. The games are easy in nature, however highly addictive for the competitive kids. This allows for opportunities with students in differing abilities.
The themes for the games are:
Fill the Wagon
Make a cake
Buggy Day
Laundry
Moon Walk
Ice Cream
Rules (some differences in games - this example is the Fill the wagon rules).
Contents & Prep:
*For easy storage of game pieces attach an envelope to the back of the file folder prior to lamination. Make a small slice in the lamination to release the top of the envelope. Attach velcro to close.
Object: Be the first to collect all the items except the leaf pile in your wagon. If you have the books or the leaf pile and someone else lands on it you have to give it to the other player.
Choose your player: Once you have chosen your player, place them on the board any spot will do!

For 2-4 players

▶️ Variation #1:
⭐ *Part 1: *The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.
⭐ *Part 2: *The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.
**▶️ Variation #2: **This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.
******************************
SELF-ASSESSMENT
This resource includes a single Body Language Self-Assessment. Students will use the body language - related statements to reflect on their understanding of nonverbal communication, evaluate their ability to interpret and respect others’ cues, and identify areas where they can improve. They will score the statements using the following scale: 2 for “Regularly,” 1 for “Occasionally,” and 0 for “Never.” They will use this self-assessment as a tool to help them identify areas for growth and improvement in their ability to read, interpret, and use body language effectively in everyday interactions.
This assessment also serves as a valuable tool for initiating conversations about the importance of nonverbal communication in building positive relationships, fostering empathy, and enhancing overall social skills. It encourages students to recognize how body language can influence perceptions, convey emotions, and support effective communication in both personal and professional settings.
