World War II fiction novels offer high school teachers a powerful tool for engaging students in historical learning. These novels provide immersive experiences that transport readers into the tumultuous era of the 1940s, allowing them to witness the human experience amidst the chaos of war. Through compelling characters and gripping narratives, students can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of the conflict, including its causes, consequences, and the diverse perspectives of those involved. Moreover, reading World War II fiction encourages critical thinking and empathy as students explore themes of resilience, sacrifice, and the impact of war on individuals and societies. By delving into these narratives, students not only enhance their historical knowledge but also develop important skills in analysis, interpretation, and perspective-taking, making World War II fiction an invaluable addition to any high school curriculum.

This list is by no means exhaustive but it contains newer as well as classic titles, many of which have been made into movies. Share this list with students for reading suggestions over the break or during the school year for book reports or other assignments. Or use for a student book club or even your own book club! World War II historical fiction is quite popular right now!!!

I admit that my own historical fiction novel, Hearts at War, is on the list! I wrote this novel with the high school student in mind, in order to delve deeper into life on the home front for those coming-of-age. The story centers around a Japanese-American boy and a Caucasian girl who grow up in Southern California and then follows how their lives diverge once Pearl Harbor is attacked. Students might be surprised to learn that Japanese-American Nisei served as secret translators in the Pacific theater of war during World War II. I wanted that piece of history to come to light which has been hidden for far too long.

This 38-page EDITABLE poetry unit promises to elicit dynamic engagement from all students without compromising on intellectual rigor. The 10 poems in this mini-unit all focus on different kinds of ethical dilemmas.

Because teenagers are genuinely intrigued by ethical dilemmas, these poems will set the stage for your class to have authentic discussions that inspire a whole new depth of reflection. The literary devices quizzes, discussion prompts, and analytical writing assignment will challenge your students to dig beneath the surface of the text and generate profound interpretive insights!

Answer keys included. (4 pages).

• Discussion Questions: This bundle features a list of discussion questions for the first poem in each of two nightly homework packets. The discussion questions will ensure that every class discussion starts on a productive foot. Every discussion question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to arrive at lucid interpretive insights! The assignment sheet contains detailed instructions for how to generate a formalist analysis of a poem (analyzing how the poem's formal features contribute to its meaning). This template can be used with ANY book. I chose to use Spookley the Square Pumpkin as an example. Print and go; easy to assemble with minimal help. Pre-cut the pieces for students who need it.

This is a discussion activity to go along with the Lorax movie. There are 6 prompts for students to discuss. Either in a whole group or split into groups, the students will discuss the prompts. This is a great activity to go along with after watching, good practice with supporting their claims and opinions with facts, and good practice for their discussion skills!

Disccusion Prompts

There are 6 different different prompts for the students to discuss. Cut out each prompt so the groups can have the prompt they need to focus on. I would recommend either splitting them into groups and passing the prompts out, or taping the prompts to the wall and have the groups move to each spot in the room for the prompt.

The prompts will have the students discussing characters, real world applications, greed, and theme!

These editable award templates are in PowerPoint form. You will download files in a flattened and secured PowerPoint file format. This format will allow editing and rearranging of text, text changes and editing font colors, etc. You can rearrange the lines and add logos and clipart where room allows. Please note that Clipart is not editable.

If you do not have PowerPoint then you can use a free on-line version at www.officelive.com - you just need to create an account.

You can change the font to whatever you prefer - I know I have favorites! The font used in the templates are free font. Potato Chips font and Poppins fonts are used and can be downloaded for free (personal use only) by clicking on the links.

The Reading Awards or Certificates are designed to fit on 8.5" x 11" paper and can be reduced or enlarged at the time of printing if needed or can be printed 2 or 4 per page using your printer's settings. If A4 size is needed then you can adjust the template to fit A4 paper size at the time of printing by clicking FIT TO PAGE. Border-free printing will depend on your printer's capability and settings.

The awards and certiifcate are for classroom and/or personal use of the person downloading only.
