The Haunted House Multiplication Escape Room | Halloween Game & Activity

By Nardine Mettry

Calling all brave mathematicians!

Are your students ready for a spooky multiplication challenge? A mischievous ghost has locked them inside a haunted house, and the only way to escape before midnight is to solve a series of multiplication puzzles!

The Haunted House Multiplication Escape is a low-prep, high-engagement activity that aligns with CCSS.4.NBT.B.5.

What's Included?

  • A Haunting Introduction.
  • 6 Chilling Clues: including word problems, crossword puzzle and a mix of 2-digit, 3-digit, and 4-digit multiplication problems to test different skill levels.
  • Escape Sheet: Students will collect "keys" (cutouts from the correct answer boxes on the clue sheets) and stick them onto the escape sheet throughout the challenge.
  • Worksheet: Provide a space for students to show their work and calculations for each clue.
  • Answer Key: Keep the game running smoothly.
  • Winner's Circle! Celebrate the victorious team with fun certificates or props for a winning photo.

How to prep?

  1. Gather Your Supplies: Print out the clue sheets, escape sheet, and worksheet (one copy per group). You'll also need scissors, tape, and a timer (optional: spooky music to set the mood).

  2. Prepare the Haunted House: Hide the clue sheets around your classroom or designate specific locations for each clue (envelopes labeled with clue numbers are optional).

  3. Assemble Your Teams: Divide your students into groups of 3-4 players.

Let the Escape Begin!

  1. Time is Ticking! Set a timer for 40 minutes to create a sense of urgency and excitement.
  2. Unlock the Clues: Each group starts at a designated clue (or envelope). Students work together to solve the multiplication challenge and find the answer.
  3. Answer Check: Groups come to you to verify their answer using the answer key.
  4. Key to Escape: If the answer is correct, students cut out the box at the top right corner of the clue sheet (the "key") then stick the "key" onto their escape sheet.
  5. On to the Next Challenge: Once they have the "key," provide the next clue sheet (or envelope) for them to tackle.
  6. Escape Achieved! The first group to finish all the clues and fill their escape sheet with "keys" wins the game!

Addition & Subtraction | Scavenger Hunt Activity [text version included]

By Nardine Mettry

Looking to add some movement and excitement to your math lessons? This engaging activity incorporates QR codes and movement to transform addition and subtraction practice into a dynamic learning experience for your 4th graders!

What's Included?

  • 12 QR Codes: These QR codes, when scanned, will reveal addition and subtraction word problems.
  • Text Version (Optional): The same 12 questions are provided in written text format, allowing you to choose the option that best suits your classroom resources and technology access.
  • Recording Sheet: Students will use this sheet to record the math problems they encounter (either by scanning the QR code or reading the text version) and write down their solutions.
  • Answer Key.

How to Play?

  1. Prepare the Playground/Classroom: Print out the QR codes and creatively hide them around your designated playing area (playground or classroom). You can attach them to objects, tape them to walls, or even place them in hidden nooks.
  2. Get Active! Instruct your students to grab their recording sheets and head out on a QR code math adventure! As they find each QR code, students will scan it (or read the text version, if you're using that option) to reveal a word problem.
  3. Solve and Record: Encourage students to solve the math problem and record it on their recording sheet, along with their answer.
  4. Move and Repeat! Once they've solved the problem, students can continue their quest, searching for the next hidden QR code or text-based problem.

Teacher's Tip:

  • Consider the difficulty level of the word problems when placing the QR codes. Place easier problems in more easily accessible locations and more challenging ones in hidden spots.

  • Encourage students to work together in small groups to solve the problems, promoting collaboration and communication skills.

  • If some students finish before others, have them revisit previously scanned codes and try solving the problems with a different approach.
