Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure (positive and negative) both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making, behaviors, emotions, and self-esteem. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations when dealing with negative peer pressure and hard to take risks when experiencing positive peer pressure.

PASSAGE TITLE: “Controlling Behaviors”

This resource includes ONE full-page reading passage related to Controlling Behaviors. The passage is in dialogue form to make it more interesting and relatable to students. To determine whether this passage is suitable for your students, this is what the passage is about:

A teenage girl innocently befriends a new male student at her high school. Her boyfriend/partner is jealous of her new male friend and demands that she not interact with him or other boys – even if they are “just friends.” In the end, she must decide whether she will honor her boyfriend/partner’s wishes and isolate herself from male friends or set boundaries or eave him due to his controlling behaviors. (Negative Peer Pressure)

After students read the passage, they will complete a worksheet that consists of four open-ended questions and support their responses with evidence from the text.

A detailed Answer Key is included to help you review the answers and engage your students in meaningful discussions.

**********************************

Writing/Discussion Questions TASK CARDS and WORKSHEETS

Included are 8 Writing/Discussion Questions that are related to the topic of “controlling behaviors.”

They come in two variations:

✅ Mini Task Cards - Color/B&W – 8 Task Cards on a page making it printer friendly.

✅ Worksheets Form with lines for students to write their answers.

The Writing/Discussion Questions are the same in both the Task Cards and Worksheets.

**********************************

❤️ When/How to Use the Writing/Discussion Questions:

The Writing/Discussion Questions can be used as a writing assignment or for discussions – your choice! You can use the Writing/Discussion Questions either before or after students read the passage.

Use Questions BEFORE Reading

  • The questions can be used before students read the passage to build background knowledge of the topic presented in the text, or students can use the questions to engage in meaningful discussions to prepare them for the reading of the text.

Use Questions AFTER Reading

  • The questions can be used after students read the passage to express their “new” understanding of the topic presented in the text. They can also be used to give students an opportunity to apply or share what they have learned from the passage.

You can use some questions before and after they read the passage – it’s totally up to you!

Please note, the Writing/Discussion Questions are the same exact questions in both the Task Cards and Worksheets. (Answer Keys are NOT included for these questions. There are no concrete right or wrong answers. Students use the questions to express their thinking and ideas about the topic under discussion.)

Setting SMART Goals | Distance Learning

By Innovations in Technology

Setting SMART Goals is a lesson that helps students identify and plan goals for school or their personal life by utilizing the SMART method of goal planning (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely). This is a great lesson to start off a new semester or a new year.

In these lessons, students are provided with an introduction to the goals methodology and suggested resources for whole class activities are included to introduce the lessons. Next, students brainstorm with a small group and then work individually to craft their own individual goal. This project was created for middle school students but would easily be adaptable to any age group.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

Files Included with this Lesson

• Teacher Notes and Resources

• Introduction to SMART Goal Planning (student handout)

• Instructions for Group Brainstorming Activity

• Individual Goal Planning Brainstorming Worksheet

• Individual Goal Planning Final Goal Worksheet

• Follow up Activity (progress check)

• Project Rubric

Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Body Image.

You can use an Anticipation Guide:

✅ Before/after introducing new material to tap into prior knowledge.

✅ Before/after watching a film clip to gauge a reaction.

✅ Before/after reading a short text to begin a discussion.

✅ Before/After discussing a topic.

▶️ Variation #1:

Part 1: The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.

Part 2: The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.

▶️ Variation #2: This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.

They will score the statements using the following scale: 2 for “Regularly,” 1 for “Occasionally,” and 0 for “Never.” They will use this self-assessment as a tool to help them identify areas where they might focus on improving their self-acceptance and self-esteem.
