Used in conjunction with learning how to do their own troubleshooting, this is a perfect introduction lesson for a technology class, or any class that is using 1:1 technology.\n\nAs an introduction to the lesson, the teacher can show a short video about the computer’s interior parts (included in the resources), or let students examine the parts of an open computer in the classroom. Obtain an old computer that can be touched without concern for damage either from an old computer you may have or ask parents for a donation. In my classes, we use both the video and the hands-on activity since students love taking things apart!\n\nThe second part of the introduction involves showing students where things plug into the computer. This is a great start to helping them become more independent computer users by learning how to troubleshoot basic problems with their computers to make sure the peripheral device is plugged in! Again, demonstrating on an actual computer in the classroom is best as the exact locations for plugging in varies by computer.\n\nFinally, have students demonstrate their understanding by completing the two worksheets included. Depending on time and your preference, they can complete labeling the parts inside the computer after the first portion of the introduction and then complete the second part of the worksheet that has them label where things are plugged in after you review that with them. Or, if you prefer, you can do both parts of the introduction and then let them complete both worksheets at the same time. Worksheets are editable and students can complete them on the computer or you can print them and let them complete them if you prefer.\n\nThe project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for upper elementary or high school students.\n\nFiles Included with this Lesson\n\n• Teacher & Student Notes and Resources\n\n• Parts Inside the Computer: Student worksheet (includes answer key) EDITABLE PowerPoint\n\n• Where Do We Plug Things In: Student worksheet (includes answer key) EDITABLE PowerPoint\n\nRemember to **leave feedback** for credits on future purchases!\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\nConnect with us for free technology tips, resources and curriculum:\n\n**Follow our blog**\n\n**Follow us on Facebook**\n\n**Follow us on Pinterest**\n",descriptionPlain:"Inside the Computer: Identifying Parts of the Computer project helps students understand what is inside the computer as well as where peripheral devices plug into the computer. In my classes, we use both the video and the hands-on activity since students love taking things apart!\x3C/p>\x3Cp>The second part of the introduction involves showing students where things plug into the computer. Or, if you prefer, you can do both parts of the introduction and then let them complete both worksheets at the same time. I have your back. I've been teaching math and computer science, including APCSP, APCSA, and Data Structures for almost two decades. I also teach an introduction course. This is part of the course I made up for my intro students. I have a BS in computer science and know what students need to know.
This is part 9 of an introductory Programming in Java course. These lessons are meant to be done over a few days; the idea is to get students doing cool stuff as fast as possible. With Java, that is NOT an easy task.
Topics:
Programming in Java 9: Creating Classes- Constructors, Parameters, and
return Statements
Setting up the constructor
A review of functions
Parameters
The return keyword
All lessons will come with the following:
a pdf slideshow
a pacing guide with hints for teaching the section and common student
errors
an assignment, differentiated with three different levels!
an answer key in pdf form
an answer key in .java form.
Depending on your style, you could go over the slides as a group, then let students play around. Or you could just give them the slides and assignment and let them go.
Let students explore and make mistakes. Let them talk to each other and discuss their approaches. Programming takes a lot of trial and error and collaboration.
Welcome to the world of programming! It's going to be a blast!

Each passage is accompanied by a robust set of practice exercises—multiple-choice questions (MCQs), true or false statements, fill-in-the-blanks, and open-ended questions—making it ideal for classroom instruction, individual study, or blended learning environments. These worksheets are perfect for students in upper elementary to high school levels (Grades 5–10) and are aligned with 21st-century digital learning skills. Whether you're a teacher looking to integrate technology into your lesson plans or a parent supporting at-home learning, this resource helps bridge the gap between education and AI in a structured, thoughtful way.
What's Inside the Computer?: Learning about the Parts of the Computer
By Innovations in Technology
Inside the Computer: Identifying Parts of the Computer project helps students understand what is inside the computer as well as where peripheral devices plug into the computer. Used in conjunction with learning how to do their own troubleshooting, this is a perfect introduction lesson for a technology class, or any class that is using 1:1 technology.
As an introduction to the lesson, the teacher can show a short video about the computer’s interior parts (included in the resources), or let students examine the parts of an open computer in the classroom. Obtain an old computer that can be touched without concern for damage either from an old computer you may have or ask parents for a donation. In my classes, we use both the video and the hands-on activity since students love taking things apart!
The second part of the introduction involves showing students where things plug into the computer. This is a great start to helping them become more independent computer users by learning how to troubleshoot basic problems with their computers to make sure the peripheral device is plugged in! Again, demonstrating on an actual computer in the classroom is best as the exact locations for plugging in varies by computer.
Finally, have students demonstrate their understanding by completing the two worksheets included. Worksheets are editable and students can complete them on the computer or you can print them and let them complete them if you prefer.
The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for upper elementary or high school students.
